White Micarta Jess Horn???

I just aquired 2 White Micarta Spyderco Jess Horn models. They both appear to look like the Classic C-34 but I have an identity problem. I will admit that the Jess Horns are not my specialty within the Hall Of Spyders. But the 2 White ones I have both look the same in design style but one has a blade 3 & 1/8ths inch long and the other has a blade 2 & 3/4 inch long.

I guess my question is: Did they make the C-34 in 2 different sizes? Because other than size they appear to be dittos of each other. Both have AUS-8 blade steel and both are lockbacks. OK you resident Jess Horn experts I know one of you here knows the score. They both cost a fortune if that helps :o

I thought that I had seen these on a website in 2 different sizes. But they are both model C-34 correct? OK I'll also go to Deacon's site a check them out too. :spyder:

I thought I knew my Spyderco Factory codes pretty well but this one has got me stumped. On the box that the small C-34 White Micarta, Jess Horn came in it has the following stamped on it>> "C34PWH". What does the code PWH stand for? My guess would be plain edge, white Micarta. But if that's not right then fill in the blank for me. Thanks guys

Yup, specials for AG Russell. In addition to White Micarta, there was also Burgundy. Regular size and slightly smaller. And finally there was regular grind and flat grind.

During that timeframe I was in my "Tactical Phase" of knives. I missed out on some good Spydercos, Cripple Creek Barlows, and a Keith Kilby fixed blade, all because I could not see myself carrying them in the Army.

Now I have a few custom black bladed & handled tanto blades that sit in the safe.

JD, Spyderco made at least five "special" versions of the C34 Jess Horn for AG Russell. Two of these were "full size", one in burgundy micarta and one in white. Both featured a full flat ground blade, rather than the saber grind used on the regular C34. The other three are sometimes referred to as "Baby Jess Horns", and sometimes as 3/4 Jess Horns. I am not sure how AG Russell referred to them in their catalog. The "Baby Horn" came in all stainless steel and black micarta, both with a saber grind, and in white micarta, with a full flat grind. All five of the AG Russell Specials came in plain edge only.

As for boxes, all the C34s that I have seen came in uncoated white boxes. The box markings on the AGR Special versions are somewhat inconsistent, but at least some of the "Baby" versions are labeled C34.

For what it's worth, I said "at least five" as I have heard persistent rumors of two other versions, and a single report of yet another, but have seen no hard evidence to support any of those. My gut feeling is that they are all mis-idenifications, but questions both here and on the AG Russell forum over on KnifeForums have failed to produce official comment.

My smaller one comes in a white box as you described. It has the letter code "C34PWH" and says "Jess Horn Micarta" and it is a flat grind as you described with a bevel on the swedge. The bigger one is totally identical with no box but in mint condition and came in sone type of bubble wrap for protection. Both have lockbacks and stainless/chrome pocketclips. And they both have AUS-8 blade steel. The white micarta is gorgeous and has an "ivory look" to it. According to the info I got out of my "All God's Critters" dealer's catalog I would guess that these came out of the the 1997 era.

Now I have another question???? Is this upcoming Jess Horn with ZDP-189 going to be like this model 34 or is it going to be more like the C-27?

Neither - the upcoming sprint run is designated C38PBRG. "C38" is the SKU for the Jess Horn Lightweight (FRN handle). Check out the 2006 Sprint Run Flyer here for an image and description.

Something about the FRN Jess Horn just does not feel right to me. Still a good knife, but in a slim gentleman type folder like the Jess Horn, Micarta seems more appropriate.

On one level, I'm glad to see a sprint run based on any of the Jess Horn models, but on another, I agree with you. While I think Spyderco's decision to provide some highly affordable knives in ZDP-189 is both admirable and very sensible, I think the Calypso Jr. and upcoming Delica have covered that market fairly well. Something a bit more upscale, without getting into the stratosphere, would be nice. The C34, especially if done like the AG Russell specials with a full flat grind, but in black micarta, would have been an excellent choice to fill that niche.

The AG Russell catalog drawings are the reason I'm fairly sure there were only those five "AG Russell Special" versions made and offered. The one caveat with them is that the upper one is slightly misleading if someone is trying to determine what they've got. The easiest way to "visually ID" a micarta C34 as either Baby or full size is by the spacing between the rearmost pin and the lanyard pipe. On the black and white Babies that space is larger than the size of the blade pivot, while on the full size C34 it is considerably smaller.
