Rockwell test marks

#1

Post by rycen »

Of all the spydes I have had pass through my hands I have come across only one.It is a Temperence fixed blade. It has 3 small marks near the handle.I am not 100% sure that is what the marks are but I think they are.

I have one, too- a First Run Moran FB01 with two tiny "dimples" on the blade. According to a local knife dealer, usually those with the Rc tests performed on them were not normally sold.

Perhaps I'll post a few pics to see if anyone here can confirm that the marks really are from a Rockwell test or not- what do I know? :)

These could be the marks of "seconds". Knives that did not pass the qc test. They are usually sold through the SFO for very cheap (Wish I lived in Golden one week a year!!!)...

Does that help?

I remember seeing a FB :spyder: on ebay withing the past years time that the seller advertised those dots on the blade. Don't know much else.
First they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not stand up, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Seconds are marked with a notch on an unsharpened part of the blade.

None here, but my first thought is the knife may have been originally purchased by a competitor and tested or owned by someone who had access to Rockwell test equipment at work.

I have a Delica with a rockwell test mark on it. But, there is no mystery where it came from. I was working in a machine shop and took it into the QC department and had them check it for me. It is a AUS-8 version and tested at 57 Rc.

Mine are also on the same side as yours are of my PE temperance...all just in a fairly straight line across, though. One to the left of 'japan' and two to the right. They all three seem to have caused more dimpling in the surrounding steel than your marks; therefore, I assume your blade is harder than mine is...

I bought my model from a person who got the knife from a QA from spyderco after performing the Rockwell test...so perhaps mine did fall short, but it does not have a "seconds" notch like true downgraded models do.
