Endura 4 Review

#1

Post by WOTANSON1 »

Hey all,
As many of you might know I'm a stay at home father so it goes without saying that money is more than a little tight now a days :o . I was discussing this very point with a close friend recently, one that knows not only am I a big Spydie fan, but also a big Endura fan. Long story short, today a brand new Endura 4 FRN SE arrived by USPS compliments of my buddy, so I thought I'd add my .02.

Blade: Much thicker tip than the previous models so a + for me. I like the grooves behind the hump as well, much better purchase than all previous versions. 10/10.

Handle: Big fan of the new style front expansion, handle shape is much more like the E1 than E3 which is great, seems longer than previous models? Really like the grooves on the front of handle, combined with the new volcano grip- this puppy ain't going anywhere. like the 4 way clip even though I'm a dyed in the wool tip up guy, nice to have the option. Aesthetically does not detract, not that that's an issue for me at all. 10/10

Overall rating 10/10: Well lets just say that the moment I opened the blade I knew this version was a big improvement over all previous models, it took 3 seconds to take my E1 out of the pocket and replace it with the E4, where it will stay for a very long time. I like the liners and although the knife feels reassuringly heavier in the hand, it doesn't add any heavy feeling in the pocket. I can't tell you the kick I get about the all screw construction, this knife locks up like a vault with no play what so ever. Sal and the gang have made a dramatic improvement to a classic and have done it well, better than I could of ever imagined, cheers and well done guys and gals!!! This Endura epitomizes all the things that brought me to Spyderco in the first place. Low weight, tough as nails utility folder with great ergos, excellent steel and easy to carry, buy one or two as soon as you can. Whether you like the E1 or E3 versions, you'll like the E4 even more.
Cheers, and Thanks Kicker!!!
Rob

Congrats Rob,
The Endura 4 does seem to have all posible kinks worked out, and may just be the solution to the perfect EDC. Thanks for sharing that great story. You've got quite a friend there, you'll have to honor the gift and use it as much as possible, and maybe give us a performance review too.

Nice review! I dislike Enduras because they don't fit my hand well, but I think much of your feedback can be translated to the Delica 4, which I like very much. I love the pic with all generations next to eachother in the same edge format. Thanks for sharing.

Congrats on your new knife, and thanks for the awesome review

You're right about the E4 though, it does look slightly longer in the handle than the previous models.

I was checking these out at the SFO not too long ago. I noticed when holding the E4, the handle seem to "stick out" behind my hand for quite some distance. It just didn't seem to fit my hand at all :(

Now the Delica 4... well that's another story! :D :D :D

Thanks for the review and great comparison pics Rob. It definitely looks longer in the pics and it also looks a bit more narrow.

Congrats on the knew knife.

Thanks to all for the nice comments, after a weekend of carrying and using the E4 I like it even more! Yes it was great for my buddy to say "just buy the knife, I'll send you a check, happy birthday early" we have known each other and have been best friends for 28 years, I bought him his first ever pocket knife (a FRN Cricket) for his birthday this year. Just to update my review; the handle does seem more narrow vertically, especially in the back of the handle, the scales are slightly thicker too, both things I like, and like Spydutch I too like that the serrations go all the way to the tip Ala E1. I noticed in the 2006 catalogue that the Delica 4 is listed at 4 1/4" closed IIRC correctly that's 1/4" longer than D3 that 1/4" could make the handle long enough for my meat puppets, I'll have to check it out. GreenCobra, I've already been read the riot act :o by Karen..no knives for Auggie til he gets his Totem chip, though I'll find some way around that ;) , and yes the big 39 is imminent. The E4 might just be the perfect EDC for me, that and my DODO, I love that knife!!! Thanks again for the comments,
Cheers,
Rob
