A good poll

I got the idea to ask my fellow spydie nuts a question.

So here it is...which you you prefer: hollow ground bade, or flat grind? And why?

I personaly perfer the hollow ground. I think it looks great, and is even better with a top swedge.

Sal, which do you like?

I have been using Hollow grind, but prefer the looks of a Flat.

I find a hollow easy to use, only becuase thats what 90% of my knives are. I have one that, provided the cops didn't mind us wearing 4" fixed blades, I would wear daily. My Hunting/Camping knife is an odd shape, having a small recurve at the base, and an upswept tip... flat grind.

We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...

One of the primary reasons the hollow grind is found so often is that it is cheaper to do than a flat grind, or the best grind, a convex.

If one chooses a grind for cutting, there is little doubt the flat grind is more effective for most cutting chores. Cutting something like cardboard will demonstrate the difference pretty clearly.

Looks-wise, I agree that the hollow grind, with a variety of blade shapes and swedges can look pretty cool.

The hollow grind sure do look purty

It depends what I'm cutting. If I'm in the office I know it will be light work and for this the hollow grind is a real pocket razor.
If I'm out on site or know I will be cutting something 2/3 or deeper than the blade width I perfer a flat grind.

My favourite carry knives, in no particular order, are: Chinese Folder, Calypso Jr, Centofante Jr, Dragonfly and Military. Hhmmm, seems to be a trend there . Better put me down as prefering flat grind.

I prefer flat grinds.
I think hollow grinds were an invention of the industrial revolution.

I like hollow for light work, and flat for heavy. Flat won't bog down in a cut nearly as easily as hollow can.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

It doesn't really matter to much to me, as long as the steel is decent. I do know that grind does have a bearing on the performance of the blade. That said I believe the flat grind has a slight advantage. I want really bad to try a knife with a convex grind, so in the future, I'm looking at getting a Marbles, or one of the new Blackjacks. RKBA!
