The title I guess is somewhat of a curve ball. But I think you guys/gals who are among the more hard core of collectors are probably on to me already. One of the very paramount reasons I became an avid collector of knives with the Spyder on them had to do with their ultimate vision. How many times have we heard that the reason that knife was discontinued or didn't take off or was not well received by it's target market is because it was thought to be that it was AHEAD OF IT'S TIME.

I think there are at least a dozen knives I could give that distinction to. Blackninja's thread on the Massad Ayoob being one of the foremost, unjustly ignored Spyders indicates again that we have a Spyder here that was too far ahead of it's time. Not taking into consideration that the designer did not really design the knife to win a beauty contest but to be engineered for a specific reason. One that comes to my mind immediately is the Shabaria. So many people won't buy a certain Spyder because they simply are assessing it by looks alone. But sometimes looks are very deceiving especially in models that are designed for specific purposes i.e. The Dodo, The Spyderhawk, The Gunting ect.

I know you all think there are models that are too far ahead of their time. But that's why the great Spyder factory enjoys the respect they got. I know you all have one that fits that category: So which is it?

Worker I would have never guessed you would have named that one :rolleyes: :D But I can agree with you because I challenge anyone to name a knife with that kind of blade geometry along with the ergonomic handle that was previously produced by any other company. The Jobs that the Lil Temp can do probably can't be matched by any conventional knife. Both blade styles could be a terrific survival knife. It will be brought back at some point because after it was discontinued then it began to be appreciated by most of the knife buying public. I think it was actually more misunderstood than most of them. :cool: :spyder:

Gunting -- I first thought, "Whoa, that fell out of the Ugly Tree!" Now that I have one, I must repent. That is an amazing blade.

With what I have seen in the last 2 days I think the very best candidates we have for re-introduction are the C-01 Worker and the C-54/C-52 Calypso Brothers all in ZDP-189. Now there's a New Year's Resolution I would like to see attained. Now you have it. No arguments :rolleyes:

I haven't read the whole thread yet but I put in my vote for the SPOT. It was so ahead of its time JD doesn't even like it. It already has spawed two variations that are in the works and it is so unpopular that you can still get the discontinued models at significant discount at SFO.

Now don't take me out of context. I did not categorically say that I didn't like the SPOT. I do own one. I just merely stated once that I thought it to be more of a specialty/novelty type knife. I will probably keep the one I got. I wouldn't even mind getting a serrated version to go with the plain edged one I have now. And I do think it is quality built in the Spyderco tradition.

I just don't take it as seriously as I do most other Spyders. Now be real: Which one would you want to carry as a "neck knife"? The Ronin or the Spot for self defense. I think the Ronin would win out 20 to one in people's preference. And I do think that the Micarta VG-10 version is the only one to have.

It is funny though that the SPOT would come up: Because actually it is a knife a bit ahead of it's time too. :spyder:

I'd like to see this JD, a sprint run of special ed. Workers, just because, as was mentioned, it's C01.

As for some of the stuff mentioned being ahead of it's time, nahhh. Most of the knives you mention are what I would call specialty products. Lets use the Ayoob for example. Someone tell me, with that style ergonomics, how it can be used other than in a SD stabbing or thrusting motion situation.

You can find a VG-10 Worker; the Limited Edition. Apparently, they didn't sell very well.

Yeah I did take your words a tad out of context JD, but novelty is about the best I've heard from most people regarding the SPOT. Therefore, I think it fits this thread well. It is so far ahead no one considers it.

For SD of course everyone would pick the Ronin over the SPOT. I always felt the Self Protection Option Tool name was rather a misnomer...not much of an option to self protect with a slightly >1inch blade. in a handle that doesn't encourage handle changes to different SD holds. The handle is a great design for normal cutting needs however. I'm excited to see how it does in the Rescue incarnation. The finger hole is great to retain the knife in hand while holding onto something else...like a rope in a raging river. It is extremely thin yet strong. In the Swick incarnation, I hope to see a lot of excitment. The longer warnie will enable more cutting goodness.

I do wear my SPOT everyday and I've worn the now 10 :eek: Ronins I have a total of exactly 1 time.
