So now is our chance! :spyder: :cool:sal wrote:I agree with Joe that the UKPK has some ergo improvements over the Caly jr. That's why I used it for the locker.
Current design calls for a bolster, lock-back, full flat ground VG-10 (& ZDP variant). Two scale materials to distinguish the VG from the ZDP.
Any suggestions on scale material would be appreciated.
If the pattern is well received, we'd follow up with a smaller version and a FRN version.

Sal wants suggestions on scale material
From the recent thread regarding the UK Penknife Sal had this to say:
Follow the mushin, but pay it no heed.

I didn't know whether to place this here, but to add to the thread I was wondering if Kevlar has ever been used for scales. The golden opaque colour is pretty neat and I'm sure the texture could be made smooth or grippy(I'd go for more grip).Just a thought. I come from a paddling background and Kevlar is a well sought after building material for its' strength ,weight, and tear-resistance.It would probably have similar properties to G-10, but the colour would surely be.... different(but in a good way).

Jigged bone, in the pattern like the Jess Horn and Kiwi, NOT like the 25th Ann Delica. Micarta, any color except black.

A swirled Micarta similar to what is shown here may be interesting:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showt ... p?t=376238 *Note: it wouldn't have to be black...
I don't believe Kevlar is all that useful for strength in scales. An example is synthetic rifle stocks. Although you can find kevlar rifle stocks aplenty...the quality manufacturers shy away from it unless obligated to by a special contract. I am thinking specifically of McMillan stocks (fiberglass for strength not kevlar). If you have metal liners the strength point is moot and then kevlar might be fun.
Deep red or burgundy Micarta for the ZDP...to mark overall design improvements compared to the Sprint run but link it by color.

I can't wait for the UKPK/Caly knife. It sounds like it might be the perfect EDC. I hope that the mating of these two knives produces a knife with the same great low-rider wire clip as that of the UKPK.
How about ol' faithful...G10? I would prefer it to be something that's not too flashy  . Maybe a black, blue, or dark grey. With a different color for each model. Mmmmm

Fibermascus would be nice. http://www.fibermascus.com
I'm thinking it's like micarta, though I believe the makeup is a bit different. The frequently asked questions on the site aren't that helpful. Apparently all we know for sure is that it IS NOT micarta :p
I've never actually handled it, but I'm told it feels similar to micarta/g10
It'd be cool if Spyderco could get some done up for a small run of knives. Maybe get the spyderco bug logo in the pattern
Like this. http://www.fibermascus.com/fern.jpg
Bark River uses fibermascus as a handle option on a lot of their knives. The possibilities are endless.
It'd be neat to do a test run on a knife and see how it works out.

Basalt Fiber Reinforced Epoxy, would be like carbon fiber reinforced but technically should be cheaper and its interesting.

Not bone, but
I think bone ranges somewhere between icky and weird, but YMMV. Anyway, I like the Fibermascus idea a lot. There are also some interesting new G10s out there, as well as crossweave CF.
Here's an example of blue tweed G10 and crossweave CF:
And here's a closeup of the CF, which I requested in a matte finish but I'm sure would look amazing in a gloss finish on the new Spydie.

Yeah, y'know what, that's my vote: polished crossweave carbon fiber.

Green Canvas Micarta is one of my favorites which I would love to see from Spyderco on a knife and the other favorite of mine is Wood. But I don't expect Spyderco would go for the one I prefer. So, maybe something like the cross weave Carbon Fiber would be a good exotic high quality choice.
If not the CF scale then a totally titanium scaled knife anodized green in color would sure be a sign of a special knife. You don't see green anodized titanium that much compared to the other colors because it requires the tools to do it right; as it is one of the, if not the highest voltage color you can achieve at requiring 110V. (see pic from the Mr. Titanium site.) Not many people want to mess with that many volts and even if they want to achieving any of the colors past 50 volts is still somewhat tricky for most which is why you always see all the lower voltage colors but rarely the ones at the top of the scale.

Wow that would be great...have a knife with faint :spyder: scattered all underneath like in the fern pic.VultureParade wrote:Fibermascus would be nice. http://www.fibermascus.com
