what is the HC of the Starmate? i'm wondering because first of all it doesn't say here on this web site, (for some reason...) i've looked all over the internet and found two different HC's for it...and i don't know which one is mine.

I've read that the proto-type models were at about 59-61 or something like that and the later models (i believe production but i'm not sure) were 55-57 because of how brittle the proto's were..but can someone clarify for me please. Thanks

The "cattle dog" lists the hardness of the Starmate (and the other CPM-440V knives) as Rc56-57. IIRC the orginal Militaries in this steel were hardened to a higher value (Rc59-61?) but there were problems with brittleness and Spyderco found that the steel performed better at the lowere Rc. I would think that all the Starmates would have been produced at the lower hardness as they came out some time after the Military. Hope this helps.

Pardon my ignorance, Clay, but what is this "cattle dog?"

Quite off the subject, but last night was looking at some fairly high end Lagioules (sp?) -- don't think I got that right. Anyhow, there were a dozen or so beautiful models with fantastic looking damascus steel. Every bloody one of them was hardened to HC 51. I know I've read that most Case knives are hardened to 52, but that is the lowest advertized hardness for any knife I can recall seeing. Of course, they sold slick horizontal leather belt sheaths, that each came with a sharpening stone. Methinks they could get lots of use, if one decided to really use one of them.

Stare,

She's a beautiful blue heeler that I use to round up the kid's pet rabbits in the back yard <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
Actually it's just me being lazy, I can never remember how to spell "catalogue" and before anyone jumps in to correct me, that's the correct <b>English </b> spelling <img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>.
