brand X etc.

Post by fredswartz »

Since I have started selling my collection of discontinued Spydercos, I brought a few skeletons out of the gunsafe. I collected Case knives for 30 years and sold most of them last year. I kept the last of the Case stag knives that were produced and I also collected all German brands of Stag copperheads and will probably sell them too as I have lost interest in them. Spyderco remains my favorite and I started with the Wegners, the Standards etc. and it grew from there. I have spent countless hours on the web finding that one hard to get Spyderco and it was worth every moment of it. Originally I got all the Microtech knives, All the Benchmade 710's, Rekats, Almars etc. but they are all gone now. What I am left with is two of my favorite brand X knives, the Buck Mini Strider PE and the Benchmark 705 PE which I will probably never part with. I regret selling the Emerson Mini Commander PE which is another of my favorites. The Buck Mini Strider PE is a chunk of a knife and could be used as a pry bar and still carried in the pocket. The Benchmade 705 PE Axis lock is a more pocket friendly version of the 710. Not being disrespectful to Spyerco but do you have any favorite brand X knives that you feel as strongly about as I do these? Jerry

I have a few Benchmades - but quite frankly I cannot understand why they cost more than a typical/standard Spydie. G10 handles, good metal in blade etc... and yet the Benchmades fetch much more for comparative knives... got me

Nothing beats an X-Acto for cutting balsa. Have a lot of pleasant memories from those little knives.

Hi Jerry,
The only knives that I feel as strongly about as Spyderco are the original Gerber Paul knives from the '70s and early '80s. Just love 'em and can't say exactly why. They might be the last ones I ever sell!

Bucks good, Benchmade is good, I really like Boker both tactical and traditional slipjoints, I also like Victorinox and Camillus and Ka-Bar. However my favs are Spyderco and Case. Spyderco is the best user knife, but I'll always probably be a Case guy first and foremost.

 I have two besides my :spyder: , and they would be my BM Stryker and a mint condition (older) Cold Steel Ultra-lock tanto blade. I haven't seen to many of the Cold Steel's (ultra-locks) around anymore. ;)

Hi Jerry. I have a Kershaw Chive which I'm pretty fond of. I found Kershaw to make bold and really innovative designs (like their latest ET). Of course, I wouldn't trust any of them to take place of my :spyder: EDC (my Chive broke its torsion spring already three times), but I do appreciate the brand whatsoever. I also like some of MT stuff (should I have a lot of money to waste, I'd probably get myself a Scarab or a Vector) and some of MoD (like the Dieter CQD or Graciella's Ladyhawk). Again, I like them as a collector (which I'm not, if I think well), but I wouldn't get any of those as a user. :o

Here's a picture of a few non Spyders I still like. I especially like the small skinning folder of Fox(second from the bottom)

IMO the D.O.G. is the only good knife CRKT ever made.

My favorite non-spyderco (tactical-type):

Microtech: LCC Lightfoot CF versions. Awesome
Emerson: CQC7 & Commander (full size)
BM: 750BT, 806D2, 710 & 650
SOG: Jet-edge II (J48), I really like how this one.

And of course Remmingtons, Russells, Randells, Ridgids, Case.....etc, etc :)

Two Benchmades, a 735 PE and a 525 PE, both great knives. My Para Mil has been seeing a lot of carry time. A couple of Eye Brand sod buster type slip joints of the old carbon steel that are great. A couple of Bucks and some misc. stuff. and then I still have the first knife given to me by my Dad many years ago.
