alan,
According to the Spyderco Story (highly recommended, BTW) Sal's first invention was a mechanical hand that resembled a... spider. There is a picture in Spyderco Story. Kinda looks like:
1) Edward Scissorhands without blades OR
2) a multiuser PARTY roachclip!!! LOL
(Sorry Sal!!)

Hi Alan. There were many high performance sports cars (& boats) that were referred to as "Spyders". Porsche, Ferrari, Alfa, etc.
There was much influence from that arena.

In my opinion the name Spyderco is hard to remember.
That's why I allways carry a knife which has the name Spyderco on the blade.

PS: It also helps if you have a t-shirt and a hat (also you have to take you hat off ...)

Yes they are I have both a hat and a t-shirt. They are very cool and have had comments on my hat already. But you have to actually call the SFO and ask for them they aren't listed anywhere. Good price also.

I emailed Angela a while back for colours, prices etc. of the hat and T-shirts but I guess she has been caught up showing Patti the ropes . If anyone from SFO is lurking here, could you email me or post the details here, please .

SFO does have hats and shirts. Hats are available in two styles. Hats and shirts are blue. One of the hats has a small spyder bug on the side, I think the one with the bug on the side, also has a small bug on the back. The other hat has a larger bug on the front center. Shirts are available in two styles also. One of the shirts is a Tee with a pocket, the othe has long sleeves with no pocket. You will have to contact SFO for prices etc. I was in the store, and I did see hats and shirts. Firefly

The other cool thing:
Spyderco "Integrity is being good even if no one is watching" is on the inside hat band of the hat!
I received a Spyderco hat for an early birthday present and must say "I look GOOD"!! LOL
