Sorry, John. Am going to keep my suggestions for some future contest, where maybe I can win a T-shirt or a knife or something of the sort.

My brain is slower than my slow average tonite. Have many, if any, previous Spydies been named for spiders? Some of the coolest spiders have strange names - like "funnel web", the most poisonous spider in the world, and thankfully, confined to Australia, so far as I know. Wolf is kinda cool, but has probably been used umpteen times.

Cricket has been used, toad, mouse, it seems any animal might do. Aren't they talking meerkat?

Well, maybe I will think about some animal names, and post later.

Spyder-Song (butterfly knife)
Spyder Moose (hardcore utility knife)
Spyderado (cowboy's knife)
Spyderco Grasshopper (hey, they've got dragonfly, cricket -- why not grasshopper)
Spyderco Beetle (built like a scarab!)
Spyderco Fury - Sounds good for a fixed blade fighting knife... *muhahahahaaa!*
Hmmmm... and the list goes on!! Great post John!

Stare : I agree, a T-shirt or free knive would be nice

I don't know why the spydercrew did not pick up on this thread, but I think the policy is to stick to
*shiver* Politically Correct *shiver*
names.

you could possibly make a small bali, but have the handles shaped like a scarab... they come apart like wings, and go around to form the handles. 2-2.5" ?

If I had any programs on my comp for that sort of work, I'd pop somethng togethe.

I like the Firefly (with glow in the dark handle) idea. It should be part of the Ladybug / Jester family.

The Taz (cause it eats through anything) possible issues with WB though.
Of course I second for Wolf.

How about a Spyder Sheep (it could have no edge to for sheeple everywhere)?

It happens that I just had a discusion with Mr. Jhones from Legal dept. There is no political correctitude involved. It's just that many good names are allready taken. For eg. I tried a design I named "Raptor". Guess what? Already taken, or so it seems
On the other hand, a glowing spot on the handles, what an idea! My wife was watching her Vesvius and said that would be nice if the blue inlay would glow in the dark
As for the names, I first read about a spidie in a SF book "Virutal Light" bu W. Gibson. The action takes part mainly in the megalopolis, so I'd call such a knife as he described "Urbana". (What he was describing was quite close to a Delica, BTW)

Firefly lovers,

Designed by G Sakai and marketed by co is the "Hotaru" Japanese for as some may know, firefly. This little jewel has a battery powered light at the butt of the knife and has a keychain already attached. They are still available in the yellow and black or black and yellow models from Hamanoichiba.

My suggestion?? For the Spyderco balisong, since we know Spydies are the king of knives a most regal name for a butterfly (and butterfly knife) would be the Monarch.

I like the name Monarch but I think Benchmade has used it for one of their butterfly lines. Plus it is their symbol.

I remember the Firefly G Sakai is (was) putting out, but I still really like tina b's idea of the glow in the dark handle. I think it would look really cool on something the size of the Ladybug / Jester.

Z-Wolf,

I know Benchmade made a Monarch folder but I'm not sure about a balisong. The boys from Cali, Clackamas, and now Oregon City have yet to respond to my inquiry about the origin and meaning of their trademark. I hope their response shows a history that's half as interesting as some of our Spydie lore. Will let you all know if and when they respond. But, why not another Monarch? The world is full of Crickets (Joker Knives), countless Rescues (BM even has a Rescue Stryker), Police models and styles, and Military models and styles. Monarch just seems appropriate for a butterfly, anything less is a Viceroy and doesn't ring the same bells. But that's just my opinion and I could be wrong. Tina's idea IS pretty cool! The green and fuschia Jesters almost fit the bill without a power source. Just wanted to let folks know that the Firefly (Hotaru) can still be found. There was one on e-bay just this week. I was hoping Linda would snag it but the auction gods did not favor the Fair Lady Glasshartt on that day.

Well, that's about it for now. Headin' in for the daily grind. Always liked your play on the sabre/lazer thing. Would that be Cannis lupis lazerus to the taxonomists among us??

Stay safe! Stay sharp!

Interesting post John, but it is as Dialex suggests.

We keep a list of all of the possible names that interest us. One of the R&D crew, Barry, maintains this list. As we think of names, we add them to the list. Barry is always checking the names with Bureau of Trademarks and his knife history books, then if taken, the "owner" or "user" of the name is listed.

Most of the names listed above have in fact are owned by an individual or company.

Also, We try to avoid any names that might indicate the promotion of offensive, aggresive or violent knife use.

The naming of a knife, believe it or not, is often a difficult task.

John,

No I didn't notice the date, but I had fun adding suggestions anyway.

Java,

I'd rather not be stuffed and put on somebody's mantle if you don't mind. This wolf likes his freedom.

Sal,
Thanks for the info - sounds almost as tough as T.S. Elliot and the Naming of Cats.

John,
That should be one wicked blade! I can see every American wanting one! I've got an mp3 file I'll be sending you regarding same. Enjoy!

Z-Wolf,
No stove top for you, dude!! A taxonomist is only concerned with the science of naming things - to stay free and unstuffed, avoid them taxidermists at all costs!

Thanx for the vocabulary leason.

"Ne vyklykaj vowka z leesoo, ..... bo tsej vowk maje ." Don't call the wolf out of the forest, because this one carries a .
