calypso jr Vs delica

#1

Post by nominoe »

i think that these two great designs are pretty similar in size and use. i'm not talking about ZDP here, just about the shapes.

i'm surprised that the delica is the best seller because i think that the handle of the calypso Jr. is a better design.

i'd like to know what all of you think. which design do you prefer, and why?

Delica had been on the market a long time when the Calypso Jr. was introduced. Internet sales had not yet become a major market force at that time and many brick and mortar dealers have limited display space and are reluctant to carry two almost identical knives by the same company.

Personally, I prefer the design of the Calypso Jr. over that of the Delica. I find the 50/50 choil gives me greater choice of hand positions and finer control. I prefer the full flat ground blade, both for looks and because I find it works better for me for food prep. And, although I generally don't use the clip at all, I prefer tip down carry on the rare occasions when I do.

That said, the new "4th Gen" Delica will have some very interesting and tempting features, so I will definitely have to try one.

When I owned a Calypso Jr (grey) I alternated it with my Delica as my EDC. I found the Delica to be the best cutter of all my Spydies bar my ParaM and I found the Calypso to be the best slicer of any knife I have owned. I sold my Calypso Jr's both grey and zdp to customers because we couldn't obtain any more at the time and I have replaced them with a UK PenKnife which in my view is a rugged Calypso. When I tested the Calypso and Delica (both VG10) they were about equal overall - the Delica did better on the rope tests and the Calypso did better on slicing and push cuts. Either one make a great EDC and the only difference in my view is personal preferance.

Both are great knives. I don't carry much my Caly, mainly because it's a black FRN in PE, a stuff hard to find. The Calypso jr. has the finger choil that some people are not too fond of. The Delica has the grind that makes the blade more eye appealing and also the hole is more exposed, therefore it's easier to open. Also, the Delica is tip up carry, a feature that many people seem to preffer.

I think the new Delica is something to look out for, with all the new features. It will all come down to what style of handle a person wants, and of course the Caly will still have a more pointed blade tip.

IMHO, the Calypso is the superior design. Better ergos, better slicer.

I prefer the Caly.
It just seems to fit my hand better. I also find it looks better. Now when the new delica comes out we will have to redo this thread

there are two main things that i prefer in the caly:

1- you can put your index near the blade and hold the knife between your thumb and your index. you can't with the delica, and it's very important. better grip, more precision.

2- the pivot and the lock of the caly jr (at lest ZDP) are thicker than the delica's. i feel the lock is more secured.

and, it looks better.

the new delica will have to be discussed :D

It's true the the Caly is the best slicer out there. There is nothing like it for food prep, paper, box cutting,..... But for heavier duty like yard work or lots of rope cutting, I'd use a Delica. I would say they are brothers. One is the weightlifter, the other is the artist... Same origin, same parents, different interest and different paths...

As was mentioned before, the Calypso jr. is the better slicer and has better ergos. Both are lefty-friendly, but I wish the Calypso was tip-up. The Delica is nothing to sneeze at, but the real conniosseur will prefer the Calypso jr.. It's something of a 'membership card' for knife knuts.

I will second what Wouter said, especially the last sentence.
Had both models, but obviously the Caly Jr. is the winner here.
I would say that "afficionados" prefer more Caly Jr. where common users prefer more Delica maybe? Dialex is the exception who proofs the rule, of course. ;)

The delica was my first. But it was lost. My calypso is much easier to hold. It has the choil too. I prefer tip down carry. So the Calypso Jr. is my choice. Mine is kind of customized. I traded DAYWALKER my Spyderfly 2nd for it. The thumb ramp has been grinded to add grip. I had extra screws and I filled in the other place where the clip goes, so I don't have any ugly holes.

How can you make a comparison when you haven't used a Delica!

I may take some heat for this( :( ), but I just don't like the looks of the Delica. I like my Caly much better. It fits my hand just great. I would prefer tip up, but I am not complaining.

I have both. The CJ is my favorite of these two. I love the finger choil and the flat grind over the Delica handle and sabre grind. I do like the tip up carry of the Delica better and the bigger opening hole. The small hole of the CJ is kind of bothersome to me after using bigger ones..

Truthfully, after owning a Salt 1 with the non sharpened serrations for the thumb on the spyderhole and the 14mm hole for opening the blade I have trouble even carrying either the Delica or the CJ anymore.

In my opinion the ultimate sheeple friendly light to medium duty folder would be one with tip up carry, the flat grind blade of the CJ with the handle of the CJ or similar for the finger choil for the index finger only in G10 like the Dodo had, and a 14mm hole in the blade for opening with the grooves or non sharpened serrations for improved grip all in one knife. ZDP189 would be all that much better IMO.

For the non sheeple friendly version offer all the above in one knife and Wave the blade. Seems to me if Spyderco offered all that in one knife they could just do away with the separate models of the Delica, Salt and CJ and have one model to do it all with the option of H1 steel for ocean or marine use.

There ya go Sal. I'll take three, one serrated H1, one in PE w/ZDP189, and one in PE ZDP189 with the factory Wave. :D

Aloha skcusloa!

Bro, it's a good thing you got it when you did...I was ready to try to FORCE a Barrel Bolt Clip into that sucker to make it a tip up carry! :o I hope she is serving you well...

Okay, back on topic...NOTHING will ever replace the *luv* I have for the Delica. I have carried more variations of this or the Endura, and these models have seen the most carry time throughout my knife life to date.

HOWEVER...when the Caly' Jr. came out, (along with the 2nd Gen Dragonfly)I got hooked on that wide flat ground blade. It tracks better when steering through thick materials. Even though this was a tip down, it did replace my Delica. (Not the *luv* for it, just in pocket!) Now that Jr. lives with skcusloa and I hope he is enjoying it as much as I have.

Of the two models, I like the cutting and wide blade of the Caly' Jr. better, but for all around use, I will stick to my Delica. HOWEVER... ...

Had Spyderco made the "Dialica" (Dialex's FULL flat ground Delica), oh that would have been THE one for me!!! ;)

God bless :)

The calypso jr should have become a mainstay 3”edc pocket knife model over the delica…

Necromancer, reviving an 18 year old thread should be illegal just as it should be illegal to suggest that the Delica is not the paragon of the ~3" pocket knife world.
