I think it would be cool if there was a custom spyderco knife website.where you could create your own knives out of a bunch of Sal’s designed handles , locks, clips ,blade steel type ,even custom embossing.there would be different prices on material. Then even a contest where Sal picks coolest designs for spyderco catalog

There has been much clamor and debate regarding this topic. I don't want to dump dirt on your fire, but for many reasons this just could not work, both for business and for customer. It is a nice thought, however.
Benchmade doing fine with their custom shop though.

Benchmade is still twice the size of Spyderco and has been running longer. It also bears repeating, "these aren't Legos".

Benchmade has a different consumer market. Most people buying Benchmades are just looking for a good one and do knife whereas Spyderco has a lot of returning customers and knife-nuts due to their many options of models, steels, colors, blade shapes, etc.

not to mention benchmade pricing has always been bordering on insane.

I’m definitely all in for a Super Wharnie on the same format as the Superhawk and Superleaf. It really seems it would be an easy conversion . MG2

Twice the size in terms of what ? Employees ? Maybe, but I doubt Benchmade has as many factories working them as Spyderco for example.

Ultimately, the size isn't really a problem. Spyderco is "smaller" and yet, it works with way more steels than Benchmade for example.

Spyderco isn't doing it for one reason : it would mess with the sprint run business model. Well that and Spyderco being quite old school when it comes to internet.

Superwharn would be good if the finger choil was deleted to max out the edge.

Trying to serve a group of very smart and dedicated blade afi's in the world of knife design and function is an interesting challenge. We accept the challenge.

I have had the thought about making a run of Traditional Tanto's as an ethnic series.

Looking forward to this...

Usually when I see "Lil" in front of any knife name, I immediately lose interest. No so with the Lil Matriarch (as long as it's serrated).

Same. Other than for pure self defense I believe the lil Matriarch is a much more useful design than it’s larger counterpart.

I definitely want to see this with a black handle. I don’t care about blade coating or wave. I’d be fine with or without either of those options.

-Actually, I’d probably choose waved over non waved since I’d have it with me fishing. I’ve had some occasions where I’ve been able to use the Spydie hole or a wave to help dislodge stubborn fish hooks so even on a saltwater knife I could find some practicality for a wave feature.

Hi Gunsandknives,

Welcome to our forum.

As mentioned, that's not info that we like to give out. I will say that it depends a lot on the steel in the blade (different steels require different lock materials), the type of lock and interface, and hardness (they're all hardened Darby).

This is a precious gem of a bombshell for me personally, if a bit old. Thank you to jfm for reviving that thread and bringing it up. As sensitive as this topic seems, it would explain why my previous enquiries remain unanswered.

Eric just approved of the sheath for production. They're working on them now. I would guess we'll be shipping in weeks, not months. The knives have been built for a long time. It's the Kydex (Boltaron) sheaths that have been the delay, which we are now overcoming. My apologies. The "Swick" concept has a long history beginning with the S.P.O.T model that we made 2 decades ago. I'll run it down once we're shipping them.
