My opinion is that, "it depends".

I've always said the box matters. I expect a 20-25% discount for a collectable of any sort if there is no box. The exception to the rule is if it's a rare item, be it gun, knife, toy etc., then having an example without the box is better than not having it.

A good example of this is Ruger firearms. I disassembled my collection and just recently sold a bunch of empty boxes on e-bay. Some tattered and ripped. The least expensive went for $75 because they know their collectables command more with a box.

Just my opinion.

To some it is important (collectors) others not so much. Depends on the person. The majority of the time knives with boxes go for more than those that don't have boxes. I've seen differences of 5-25 dollars depending on the knife

It seems that most would perfer to have the original box when trading or buying. I had been keeping my boxes and as a result of Hurricane Katrina I lost all the boxes but that is a small issue in reference to everything else that got trashed by 30" of water in a house.

One important lesson learned, my Cannon Safe is fire resistant but wasn't water proof. Nasty mold on all of my long guns and some knives that were stored in the bottom of the safe.

As has been said, it has an effect on the value, how much depends somewhat on the knife. The condition of the knife can also be a factor, a missing box would be less of an issue with an obviously used knife than with one in "like new" condition. Do be aware that, where Spydercos are concerned, there are also a few models that never had a box, they came (and some, like the Spyker, still come) in zippered pouches.

I wouldn't say insanely important, but a lot of people like to have them. Resale is better if you have the box, almost always at least. Like it was said before, if it's a rare one, I'd rather have a rare one with no box over no rare one at all!

If you're going to use it, then you don't really need the box do ya?

To me it matters

I have 2 categories of Spyders in my collection. I have my knives that are strictly collectibles that I have no intention what so ever of using them. I also have my EDC arsenal. Which consists of about 25 Spyders that I rotate as EDCs which I use from time to time. If it is a user then I could care less about the box. But when I am looking at a knife to collect then the box does add an element of collectibility.

Also another thing to be considered is that some of the boxes themselves are somewhat collectible. For instance I have a Pink Cricket, Original Mariner (With MARINER written on the blade), Plain edge Remote Release. These are fine collectibles that I would love the factory boxes and would pay decently for them. Yes they matter ;) :spyder:

I think it's only important in collectables

kinda like a collectible car with all original parts or something like that.

Personnally I don't hunt rare spydercos so boxes are of fairly low importance once they are home and into my pocket :)

I keep all my :spyder: in their boxes, in a dedicated safe. Only the WTC lives in its presentation box, with its empty box next to it. In addition to collecting :spyder: , I seem to collect safes ! I currently have five, with another on its way soon !!
Sorry to hear about your problems, John Watson. Makes me sit up and think : what would I do in those circumstances. I think gunning a bead of silicone around the safe door and the keyhole would suffice. Maybe also put a de-humidifier inside as well. Its a pity one always learns the hard way.

I read this and think of the forumite that just lost all his to the flooding, or the other one who's girlfriend threw his boxes away.

Don't know why I keep all my boxes, but I do. Helps me keep them organized, I guess.

yeah who was it that the girldfriend threw away the boxes?

People like Michael Cook(if he wants) and myself who doesn't care for the boxes could send them to Watson or the other guy whose name escapes me at the moment.

Anybody interested in a :
black milie box
SS criquet box
yellow salt 1 box
delica box?
I think that's all I have left for now

IIRC, it was Jim Malone.
IF the Delica is pe, i'll take it. However, if one of the ones who lost theirs needs it give them first. Mine came in a clampack.

For the Q's that I collect if I find a blade variation without a box, no problem. Usually I like some kind of box to store it. Does not have to be the original one. That reminds me I need to email Joyce to see if I can get couple more :) . Last 2 have not had boxes.

I would say maybe a 5.00 differance unless it is a numbered run where as the box would have the same number as the knife or if it was a case or wood box like on the anniv Worker or anniv Delica.

To me, boxes are very important. I will not buy anything unless it has the original box. Weird, I know... I have passed up some good deals because of it as well..

I find that most people really don't mind, as long as they have the knife. :)
