Evolution Set Question

#1

Post by recoil »

I have had an Evolution Edition sitting on my desk at work for a number of years now and I have a second coming shortly for my home office.
The set was limited in number to 1000 pieces but I have heard the story on a few occasions that the set never made it to the full 1000.
Does anyone have the correct info on this?

thanks
dave

Hi recoil,
I'm not sure there's ever going to be a way to find out. I've had 4 sets, and 2 passed on to new owners. Numbers were 291, 461, 505 and 523. The latter is the highest I've ever seen. I don't think the folks at Sypderco either know or would tell us. Has anyone out there seen a higher #?

Hi Swede,

My question stems from the fact that I have heard the tale numerous times and I have also owned and passed along a set numbered in the mid 800's.
That in and of itself is no indicator of the number of sets that ever got out of the factory since I also have a ti-herbst numbered in the 600's and we know that very few of those ever made it to resale.

If you notice the last line of the ad I included in my original post states that the knives will not be sold seperately, however, a number of these seperate knives are in circulation and I have even seen the zowada damascus folders sold as seconds which leads me to believe that some sets did not hit the street.

We may never know.

that's the MSRP if I'm not wrong :)

looks like a spyderco catalog scan. The price in stores must be better than that :)

Sometimes, they are not as pricey as you think. A nice-looking set just went on ebay this weekend for the mid-300s. I've seen them as low as 250, up to 450.

And Recoil,
I think you're right about numbering not always meaning much. Foe example, the #s on CF Walkers I've seen got pretty high... not in keeping with published production numbers.

Good luck Alex, I've got mine, so you won't have to worry about ME outbidding you :D

Recoil, Swede, it's really a shame the records on stuff like this are so hard to pin down. Have seen more than a few of the Zowada damasus Workers for sale "loose" and AFAIK, they were only ever made for the Evo set, so some sets were either never completed, or broken up later by dealers or owners. Have also seen a couple loose 2 screw Workers with Evo set type numbering, which reenforces the idea that some sets were broken up "aftermarket".

Guess it depends on where/when the numbers were applied and the actual sets packed up. I've always assumed these steps were done in Golden, after QC inspection of the knives, but, if not, there could very well be "gaps" due to rejects.

FWIW, the set currently on the block on eBay appears to be in the 700's.

Swede, before this weekend the last few I watched went for right around $500. Just hope for last weekend's buyer's sake that the seller packs that Evo set better than he packed the Spydercard I got from him quite a while back. Ok, I hold a grudge forever, must be the Italian in me. :o

Well, I did some more research and found a statement from 1999 in which Sal pretty much answers the question as to the full 1000 sets.
Sal stated that 1000 sets were planned but they did not have enough billets to complete the 1000.
So basically we don't know how many Evolution Editions were produced but we do know it was less then 1000
