Hi... I am new to this forum. Sure like the info. Can you tell me the model name or # of this knife. I bought it about 1985. Have not used it as I switched to leathermans years ago,although I bought two natives on line last night. I can see hanging out here is going to cost. This knife measures 3-7/8" closed, 6-5/8" open, 2-3/4" blade. One side of blade stamped "spyderco", the other " Seki-Japan".The clip is marked "US Patent 4347665". Under that it's "Foreign Pats Pend" What knife steel is it? Thanks for your help!

I may be wrong but I would go with a C05 Standard :D

Indeed, it is a Spyderco C05 Standard Economy model (the "real" C05 Standard has G-10 handles and ATS-55 blade, and the clip is fixed with screws).
Unfortunately, I can't tell you right now too many details about your knife, but it's all written in "The Spyderco Story".

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the C05 Standard was introducted in 1984.

The steel used in the SS model was ATS-34. It was also avalible in G-10 with a ATS-55 blade.

I can't add too much by what has been said, but 2 things:

I believe the steel is more pedestrian than ATS-34. Probably G-2 or AUS-8, maybe even AUS-6.

These pieces have become somewhat collectible, being almost prototypes of many of the modern clipits. They're pretty hard to find in new condition. Most have some pocket time, like yours. Even in it's condition, I would hang onto it. It will appreciate in value.

Well steeldust, on my Economy, the blade is marked AUS-6. Would imagine they all were the same steel. Is yours marked at all, or does it just say SPYDERCO on the opposite side of the blade tang?

Hi, The Deacon, It just says "SPYDERCO". In looking at the model native, there are lots of steels used, but they are marked. Guess I never got knives good enough to mark like Schrade, Buck, cold steel, but I'm changing that now. Thanks for the help!

The "Economy" version of the Standard was introduced in '84 and discontinued sometime between then and around '94. The lack of steel markings indicate that yours is an earlier one than mine, but according to the book, they were AUS-6 from the time they were introduced, through the change from stamped clip to screw mounted, right up until the model was discontinued. Then, starting in '98, a G10 verison using ATS-55 was produced for a while. Pic below shows all three. I also see that yours says SEKI - JAPAN while mine say SEKI CITY - JAPAN, wonder if that changed at the same time the steel markings were added, so many changes, enough to drive a collector nuts. :D

Says Spyderco on one side and seki-japan on the other.

Nice bit of spyderco history, hold onto it.

Just thought I would add another positive comment. I very much appreciate this information presented here, as I have exactly the same knife listed above, as well as some smaller Spydercos with very close similarities. I also wondered what exactly the model(s) name(s) were myself. Maybe I will do a digital of some of my Spydercos for some clarifications, as well.

As a collector of blades of many decades and for all of the people I know, in-the-know, Spyderco sure has fine quality products. At one time in my life I had/owned hundreds of knives. In recent time, I have since either given away, sold, trashed, or relegated to the very bottom of the tool box other company's products and kept only quality brands like Spyderco for actual serious use/carry or collecting. I am still buying Spydercos and I just ordered a couple this week from your website.
