What kind of knife(?) is that?
For me, it's cutting poly-pipe used in drip systems; people see me reach, hear a "snack", then there are two pieces of whatever I am holding, the :spyder: folded and back in my pocket. It's second nature. :D
So, what else?....

Get that question most often when I use one of my Kiwi pictures as wallpaper on my computer at work. Their question is followed by a nervous look :eek: when I say "it's a Spyderco Kiwi, I have one just like it in my pocket" and reach for the subject of the photo. That is then followed by a look of profound relief when they see it's MUCH smaller than it looks on the screen. :D

Being on a new job for a week, I've gotten a lot of looks and inquiries regarding my knife. I carry the FRN Delica and what turns heads the most is the speed in which the blade is deployed with the SpyderHole. It's so quick and has that positive "snap" sound rastus mentioned, that people think it's an auto opener. Most are impressed after they handle it, and some of those have written the name down, and some of those who have written the name down have asked where to get one.

I can't remember a single person who made a positive comment about one of my pocket knives (except knife nuts - but they do not count as they usually know about :spyder: anyway). Most of the NKP that I encountered were plain and simple superficial: Sharp and pointy piece of metal with a handle attached to it in the hands of an average looking guy = most despicable deadly weapon of doom in the hands of a totally wicked mass murderer.

Same when you meet new people. "What are your hobbies?" "Collecting knives and I also like to make knives myself!" Most will give you a strange look and it is as if you could read it in big red letters: Most despicable deadly weapon of doom... blah blah

I am still waiting for the day when some NKP will say something positive.

:spyder: People ask me why I carry a civilian or kerambit or spyderhawk or even my Lil' T and I'll tell them I carry only a knife because the bed-wetting liberal governor won't pass handgun concealed carry. It never gets the responce I hope for (**** commies) :spyder:

All I ever get is "why do you need to carry a knife that big?"

It's really pretty dumb because most all of the time they are talking about my FRN Delica SE.

If I made Spyderco knives wallpaper on my work PC I think people would seriously think that I am trying to be "threatening". I'm not even kidding either. They would look at it as if I have a picture of say an MP5 as my desktop wallpaper. They would frown on that big time. I would probably be asked to change my background.

One day, an inmate asked me why I carry a flashlight on my duty belt. "So I can see in the dark", was my answer. Duh!

People never usually see my knives, so they don't have the chance to ask. I can't carry them inside at work (any weapons are verboten in the prison). In public, when I use them, it's generally a quick cut and they're away before anyone sees them.

lol only a 3", i relaly have never gotten any of that in the city. I use my Military alot. I mean sometimes people make faces and stuff.

cutting open a commercial grade steel can with a manix got lots of people asking...

any hawkbill or reverse S curve blade also gets questions...

I'm fortunate that at the current time I live in a place that is very ok with knives. Every guy I know owns a knife whether it is a quality knife or not. If I have to use one in publc I almost never get any looks or anything of the sort, although most people around here don't know anything about Spyderco. For most where I live Kershaw, Gerber, and Buck are the preferred brands. Back when I worked for Hollywood Video I did get a comment from a customer one day while using my SE Police but it was a comment of admiration not of scorn or fear.

Sometimes Women who see my spyderco's and (I sometimes EDC up to 8 knives) will ask: "Why do you need so many knives"...my response "Do you Cook with One Pot!) they don't ask me nothing after that :D ...Doc

To cut things with is my normal response. I then ask if they never need a knife. If they say no, I ask how they open CD wrappers. That gets most thinking about fumbling with the little plastic thread thingy that normally doesn't work. "I just cut them and pull them off..." :)
When properly and calmly introduced to knifes, most people are rather impressed with the design and functionality.
I emphasize the tool character of knifes. But then, I'm not normally carrying the "Vaquero Grande". :D

When I show people the Spyderco UK penknife slipjoint and tell people its completely UK street legal. I have to show it to people as the discreet gunmetal wire clip and low pocket carry makes it un-noticeable.

I wouldn't always add the "...you ignorant bastard." ending, that would be reserved for severe ignorance. It's just one of those questions that the asker hasn't thought through. Kinda like asking, "Why do you always drive your car to work?"

My Delica is so worn out and crappy looking with that full flat grind blade and wireclip that it seldom gets a second look. :rolleyes: If they only knew... :cool:

I was recently working with an art director on a job and needed to cut off a piece of 9 foot seamless paper. When I pulled out my stainless crickett the reply was wow, thats some knife. My reply when ask why I carry a knife is to cut things sometimes followed by what do you cut things with?

Well, after one of my customers asked, I showed him my Native SE, Delica CE, and (at the time) my C-II. I just handed them over and kept working. I did warn him that they were very sharp and asked that he please not sue me if he cut himself, with a grin ( :D ). He stayed outside walking with me as I fixed his sprinkler system, playing with my :spyder: 's when I stopped to do something. After he had gotten used to the :spyder: hole, he was in the pre-stages of addiction. Before I left (he had a problem that I needed specific parts for that I don't stock), I loaned him the Delica. When I came back three days later, he was hooked. I pointed him to Spyderco.com and NGK, thus causing him incurable :spyder: addiction; I have no remorse.

I am daily...if not hourly, cutting heavy plastic or reinforced nylon banding off of bunks of lumber. Or gobs of shrinkwrap off of palletized material. While most co-workers or delivery guys are struggling with simple utility knives, I have found that my D'allara rescue makes short work of just about all materials, as does the SE ATR. The most impressive cutting job recently was a 6" kevlar reinforced banding strap that the ratchett mechanism had failed on, a Plain Edge Manix zipped through it like a razor blade through wax.

When the delivery Driver asked "why do you carry such a big sharp knife?" I responded with "A Small dull knife does me no good."
