Howdy,

I never really liked how the gunting carried because of the horn and the pocket clip placement. So, I did something about it. It's waved by taking the dremel tool to the horn, and then I sent the knife off to a part-time maker, who shall remain nameless until I get his permission to post his name. He drilled both sides for tip up carry and cleaned up my dremel marks.

The knife works as waved or by thumbing the hook open. Works well drawing into a pikal grip... 1 second hit, w/ power, from pocket to 2x4 target, timed by shot timer.

Hope this modification doesn't offend Mr. Glesser or Mr. Emerson; it will never be for sale because it works so well.

Out of morbid curiosity, why use the Gunting for such a conversion? Methinks there would be any number of Spyderco knives that would convert as easily or more easily. Did you just have one lying around?

I understand your problems with the horn and clip placement, but time has taught me that every feature of the Gunting works exactly as designed when used as designed. Tucking it in your pants does get a bit uncomfortable. :eek: This explains the large number of sheath makers for this particular knife... :D

I personally think that the Gunting is the one knife that should really have included a DVD with each knife purchased to explain the concept and use of this unusual design. I feel that this would have negated a LOT of the complaints with the Gunting.

Just kidding. I am glad it works for you, but you are exactly correct in your thread title: not a Gunting, but a cool Spyderco knife mod nonetheless! :cool:

I used the gunting because of the following:

1. I owned one, but I never carried it in its prior configuration.

2. Look at the picture. Removing the horn and using part of the hole for a hook did not weaken the blade in the least. If you waved an endura by opening the hole, the blade is weakend laterally. Hope I explained that right.

3. It's the best made, strongest folding knife I've ever owned. I had to find a way that I'd carry it and use it.

And, the shot clock thing, I can't do that every time. I'm still leaning, but it's fun to try for academic purposes.

I think it's pretty cool to see folks modify production knives to suit their personal needs, desires or style. Nice job, Bob.

Oh, absolutely! I loved playing with one with firearms and I am sure using a knife will be equally rewarding.

IMHO it no longer is a Gunting (and I'm almost sure Bram will agree with me on this one), but you got yourself a strong and reliable wave opening knife.

is it a gunting if one gunts with it? It is certianly no longer a kinetic opener!

Interesting mod & re-design. It's good to hear that you'll carry it now -- that's what you wanted anyway.

Great job, if you want to do something, just do it, the waved feature is great, I have the new waved endura, it work like a champ.

I love it, because of the wave, hole, size, weight, etc.

I think it's a great mod! The Gunting is so specific to a certain set of techniques; I could see modding it if you don't use those techniques. Many times I have been tempted to buy a Gunting, not because I want to take advantage of the SD design, but because it is such a well built, unique knife that looks useful as an EDC. If it serves your purpose, and it sounds like it does, then more power to you.

I'm glad there's a lot of understanding here. The knife has turned out to be a very good, do everything type of knife now. Before, the horn would prevent it from doing certain things well, say slicing a tomato.

I haven't named or re-named a knife before.

As to the techniques, you're right- if you don't suscribe to them, why keep the features that get in the way of everything but those techniques. Hope I'm saying that right; it's meant to be nice.

This knife's compression lock is a thing of beauty and simplicity, as well as the Temp. Jr.'s.

Well Bob, my feeling is that once you've paid for something, it is yours to do with pretty much as you please, as long as you don't harm or endanger anyone in the process. Can't say I find the mod appealing, but it's not my knife, or my money that went into doing the mod. If you are happy with it, that's all that counts. Heck, Sal has politely explained to me that chamfering the thumbhole on a Spyderco is not a good idea, as it increases the chance of your finger slipping, but I still prefer the thumbholes chamfered on the ones I carry.

Lord help me, I really dig that mod. I'd be tempted to muck with it further: round off the horn that separates the fingers on the handle, and it looks like it'd be comfortable in reverse grip edge-in. Fair little pakal fighter!

The knife is very comfortable in a pakal grip, edge in.

To facilitate a faster draw I changed the clip to the other side, left side, but still carry it in my right front pocket. Makes it very fast into the pakal grip.

Also, because the point is below the centerline of the knife makes it pretty suitable for a pakal type jab, theoretically speaking, of course.
