I just saw a picture of the Volpe (Spyderco/Fox collab) .The steel of this knife is N690Co. Can anybody tell me more about that steel? I have a Fox skinningblade folder of the same steel(the 432A)
When this knife goes in production I will most certainly order it. What a beautiful knife it is( the Volpe that is)
I really don't know. When I bought that Fox I searched and asked everywhere but I couldn't find any info on the steel so I stopped searching. But now spyderco brings out a knife with that steel too I wondered if there is more info about that steel.
N690- An Austrian made stainless steel, which is comparable to 440C in performance and value. Keen edge qualities with excellent corrosion resistance.
Yes, that is indeed....from the Benchmade :o webpage. I recalled that they were using it in some of their knives. So everything you read about 440C should mostly hold for N690. I believe the compostion is slighly, but not significantly different from 440C.
N690C is also used by Extrema Ratio. In my limited experience the one used by Fox is not heat treated as well as ER and is at a lower hardness level: Translation: It's easier to sharpen but does not hold an edge as well. Fox is not so much a manufacturer as a marketing company - a bit like Cold Steel but without the hype.
Photos of the Spyderco/Fox Volpe please!
My father always taught me not to trust a man who was not interested in cars, guns and knives.
