PE, CE or SE?

#1

Post by AllenETreat »

I've done this before. But for the benefit of the new
members...

Which is your FAVORITE edge configuration & why?

Me : :spyder: edge as I don't do much intricate cutting these days,
but need that extra *ooommmmpphh* that :spyder: edge offers in
my SE FRN & SS Cricket(s). So cast you vote and give us an explanation!

Plain all the way, I have hardly anything to cut that needs serations and I love a plain edge when it is real sharp. I just love to touch it gently with my fingers. Besides, the arm shaving act could get messy with an SE blade. I believe that a combo blade leaves too little of both edge types. Maybe I have to give the others a chance, but for now, this is what I prefer.

Hello,

I go the PE. When razor sharpened, man has no problem to cut almost anything. SE tears some kinds of material, is harder to maintain. I also got SE or CE, but like the PE most.

my vote also goes for the SE as i probably only use my knives for rough cutting.. i have only 5 spydies now but only 1 is PE (the first, before i discovered the SE :p )

Mainly PE as I find it sufficient for most tasks and looking better on most models. I do however like SE on some models like the Rescues and for some tasks. CE is a compromise edge.

I love CE cause it's the best of both worlds. PE for boxes and tape. SE or rope and zip ties. Works perfect for me.

Peace.

Spyderco is really known for making the best serrations on the market....and I agree with that, but I remain a plain edge guy.

I have come to the point where I prefer different edge types for different purposes or models. For general utility I prefer PE, also for MBC. If I could carry only one folder I prefer SE, so I am sure I can cut everything I come across for an extended period before sharpening is needed. A large CE blade (4 inch) is very nice for allround utility chores.

I don't really have a favorite per se, but I end up most with PE blades. So I'll vote PE.

Combination Edge works best for my needs. However I use PE and SE Spyderco knives also. Depends on the model and initial release model. :)

I voted for plain but I do like the CE just as well. In fact, before meeting up with you people  , everything I bought in the past was a combo edge because I liked the best of both words.

Jimmy, I agree with you on the SpyderSerrations, they seem to hold up better to my untrained way of thinking. Some day I'll know enough to explain why. :)

What Mr Blonde said -- choose the knife/edge appropriate for the task.

I'm gonna go with Ed and Mr Blonde on approriate edge for the task at hand, however I do like the plain edge for most purposes. What the heck get them all.

Carried all of them, I agree with J.Dean that :spyder: edge is the best out there, but plain for me...

All my Spydies have the Combo Edge. Love it. The best of both worlds. And yes, I agree that Spyderco makes the best serrations in the knife market. Period.

With that said, I want my next Spydie purchase to be plain edge. Figured I'd try one of those out.

Some tasks and some knives just beg for serrated.

Cardboard, nylon banding, cable ties, thick or wet rope, fresh bread, bagels all scream for serrated.
Tape, thin nylon rope, general utility, whittling... all do great with a SHARP plain edge.

Given the option of 1 knife only, I'm taking a 3 blade stockman... convex and polished, thin and polished, thin and rough. :p

Today's cutting at work was just the ss pe police and ss se cricket.

SE for me.

Makes a good EDC, it stays sharp longer, and I like to be different :)

Plain edge, too lazy - and I just know I'd sharpen a serrated edge one scallop at a time, and it would take forever! :o
