What to get?

#1

Post by Ben549 »

I need a new knife and I allready have a large collection of folders, daggers, throwing knives you name it but what I really want to purchase is a butterfly knife. I am not sure what to get though I mean theres the benchmade models but they are so expensive its ridiculous. I like the Spyderco Spyderfly but thats about $100, And the Spyderco Szabofly is coming out some time any one know when? I dont have a large income and auto knives are illegal in my state plus I am young hence the fact that I live with my parents. I guess my overall question is what knife should I get that I wont have to replace anytime soon.

Ben, what state are you in? Balisongs might be illegal too, if autos are.

EVERYTHING is illegal in my state. To be completly honest, if its illegal or not doesnt matter to me hence that fact that im 15 and i shouldent have one anyways. I just love knives...and fire...and guns and I allready own a balisong I ordered it just to get the basic concept and I like the concept just the knife I bought sucks.

in Canada, at least in Quebec province nothing is legal, even for the smallest Victorinox which is smaller than a ladybug, but I don't really care

I think that a kitchen knife is dangerous too, just depend on the hands of whom is as been put o_O

irresponsible, idiot and immature dudes will always be there

small that I have and just love, is the Dragonfly in Stainless it's an awesome cutter(SpyderEdge)

medium size, I'll be buying a Para-Military after reading numerous positive review about it (PlainEdge)

full size, I would go for an ATR Titanium, but I don't own one, but looks really strong and I love the blade shape

spyderfly or szabofly. will you be using it for fighting or utility? for utility the spyderfly is better. for knifefighting go with the szabofly.

Check out Bladeforums.com.You can find BMs there for around 100.00.I just got a BM 42 in a trade over there.
The Spyderfly is nice but a tad heavy,BMs IMO are best with Microtech comeing in a very close second.

The Benchmade 42 is the best Bali-song around. You can get em for around $130.

Notice that New Graham is sold out.Seems most dealers are sold out more than they are in stock.I don't think BM is makeing as many as they once did,if you find one at a good price grab it.I know there are at least one for sale on bladeforums right now and several for sell on USN includeing a BM 31.I really love the 31,need to try to get another some time.

There isn't much to choose from Spyderco's offer of balisongs right now. They will come with a smaller one in the not so distant future.
Since there are many types of balisongs on the market (lockable, non lockable or partially lockable, with the lock on the edge side or on the spine side, with various blade and handles shapes and materials), you'd better check some and see which appeals to you. It would be a bummer to get an expensive balisong and figure out later that it isn't what you wanted. First clearify for yourself what would you expect from a balisong.

Ben, as of right now, unless Sal or Joyce chime in with some late-breaking news, there is no firm date on the SzaboFly. So, if you want a Spyderco made bali right now, your only option is the SpyderFly. It would also appear to me (although my experience with balis is extremely limited) that the more symetrical design of the SpyderFly might make it a bit easier for someone just learning how to flip them. One last point, if you plan to do a lot of flipping, you may want to do some further research on how fixed stop pins on the blade (as in the SpyderFly) compare to replaceable stop pins in the handle (as on the BM42) under hard use.

Aloha and welcome Ben549!

How often do you do "the dance"? What kind of Bali do you have now that sucks? What do you intend on using your Bali for?

The Spyderfly is a good bali, but I am used to BM's and ANY Bali with more "rounded" type handles. The Spyderfly is rather squareish, and the handles are very end heavy. This makes the dance a bit harder if you are used to the "typical" Bali handle, but as with anything, that's where practice comes in. I can do most of the flip&finger twirls with my Spyderfly, just not as fast as I could if I had one with more rounded handles.

As The Deacon stated, currently, your only option as of NOW is just the Spyderfly.

God bless

Right now i have a jaguar ( i think its a fake) its just got the rounded handles with the synthetic inserts. Thats why i kind of liked the spyderfly is the handles arnt rounded. The only problem is I cant go to and places around here and try them out because im only 15 and im not allowed to. The jaguar i have is extremely heavy (i dont have very much experience with balisong knives though) but it is very slow to flip cause i can "do the dance" and i feel like im able to simply watch the bade move and be ready.

I got one of those flippy-floppy knives. ;) I watched a few movies on tv and thought it would be a good knife to have. :) Good thing the blade was never sharpened and I haven't sharpened it. I tried to make it work like the ones I saw on tv. It made my back ache from picking it up from the floor. I also knocked some plaster off the walls and ceiling. Stuck it in the carpet too. Slides great on the linoleum floors too. I can't get the hang of it so I retired it. I'll let the younger fellows play with them while I use my Cricket and Delica. :D

Actually the knife i got is kinda weird it has really heavy handles and the blade is loose and really sharp (odd for a crap knife) but even though im a beginner i sill have only cut my self three times and thats from being pinched and so i was just like screw this knife ill just get a better one. I really like the spyderfly.

Ben, can i give you some "old guy" advise?
First i practice Fillipino Martial Arts. The Bali-song is a traditional weapon from the Fillipino's. First get a good trainer like this one:
Ronin Gear Bali Trainer
http://www.newgraham.com/butterfly.htm

It is not a real knife so it can not be illegal to own one. Train with it untill you are a master with your trainer. Buying a sharp butterfly knife and THEN start to practice is like not having a drivers license and trying to drive with a F1 car!

Get the trainer, it is not a weapon, so very legal , but you can learn all the basic AND flashy knife flips, and getting the feel of a balisong in your hands.

After you have mastered the trainer THEN you go on to a sharp bali. The bali is so specialised that it is easy to hurt or cut yourself.

The Szabofly is a unconventional asymetric design, so it's even more important to learn the moves before flipping a "live" one!

You are 15, don't buy an illegal knife, it might get you in juvenil detention. Flip with trainers till you can do it sleeping at night and when you are 2 or 3 year older (and a master at that point) get the money you saved every month and get a good balisong, then it will not mather if it will cost you 200 $ or 300 $ !

good advice from someone who has been there too! :)
