Hello all

I just recieved my new millie and love it, its is my new edc and my favorite knife. :)
I thought it was cool at first but it was the great reviews and posts on this forum that finally pushed me to get it. ;)

I was wondering when exactly did spyderco stop marking the blade as Military and replace it with the :spyder: ?
And how do i tell what kind of pivot it has (eccentric or other) it has the allen head screw in the back?

I did a quick search of the word military but didnt realy find to much on the change of symbol.

Thanks,

you got one with :spyder: on the blade instead "military"?! if so, you've got a proto i think. if not, then i'd say the pics of the mili with just the :spyder: on the blade were proto-pics, and they stuck with 'military' on it instead.

the ones with eccentric pivots are those up till the cpm440v's, the screw is a T15. the non-eccentrics are the new ones with s30v-blades, the screw is a 3/32" allen.

enjoy your mili!

I've only seen the :spyder: marked millies in the dealer cat...

and I'll just confirm that the cpm440v(s60v) are eccentric pivot, s30v is a normal pivot.

EXCEPT for a very precious few. I got one of the first S30V's and it has an eccentric pivot with T15 torx head. Some got out before they got all the manufacturing changed over.

As far as I am concerned, I think I have one the highest precision Millies out there, since the S30V's were engineered to tighter tolerances, thus negating the need for a ecc. pivot, yet mine still has one due to manufacturing scheduling. That's my story anyway. :D :D

yeah mine has a S30V blade so i guess i have the normal pivot, I still wonder about the change from Military on the blade to just the :spyder: symbol.

BTW did anybody else have a "stain" of sorts on the blade in the outline of the g-10 handle when you first got it?

Thanks for all the info.

when i got my black mili i discovered it soon developed a 'stainy look' , dark olive/greenish, near the choil. don't care much about that. what bothered me more is that it came with a signicant chip out of the G10 handle near the liner, which looks awkward, but i got over it and forget about it.

btw, i'm fairly certain the supposed change from 'military' to ' :spyder: ' never happened. these are just from proto-pictures from the catalog and such.

or, do you actually HAVE one that does the :spyder: on it?

Yes Denn I kid you not its in front of me right now as i type and yes it has a small little :spyder: bug on it instead of Military. I was a bit dissapointed when i first saw it since the picture of the knife on the website has Military on the blade I thought i got screwed.

cool, i actually envy you! never sell that knife! (unless it is to me ofcourse).

i recently got a black mili s30v plain edge, which was brand spanking new, and it still has 'military' on the blade...

i wonder if Sal could shed some light on the military VS :spyder: issue?

We've changed the Millie many times over the years. minor refinements as we learn more about the design.

We switched from the Military engraving to the bug on the blade just recently. Complaints from customers that the "Military" made the knife NKP unfriendly (Non Knife People), especially in a courtroom.

We are working on the next refinement now which is adding serrations to the choil and changing the serrations on the spine.

thanks for the info Sal. man, the upgrading and refinements never seem to end, outstanding. i think spyderco is one of the few companies that is so much 'in touch' with its customers. impressive

Sal, I don't know if you can say (but I do know that if you can't, you won't.) ;) :)

-Is this in the wake of that much publicised trial and/or on the advice of counsel, or just from ELU feedback?

Some of the questions that came up in a case involving the model. The person carrying the model was asked to explain why he was carryng a "Military" knife in a non-miltary setting. Explanation was neccessary and shouldn't be.

That combined with requests from ELUs on the forums and at shows. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Time will tell.

it's one from the first generations, they're becoming pretty rare especially if it's one with the 2 screws clip... ;)
