Broke my military - what the **** happened???

Hey room,

my military is my most commonly used EDC, since it is the most rugged spyderco knife, or of any brand, that I have (had..).

And now I have actually managed to snap the tip off, about the last 3-4 milimeters of it. And no, I did not try pry a concrete slab off the ground, nor did I attempt to slice open a tank: I WAS CLEANING A CHICKEN! Really, no kidding, whilst slicing up a chicken, the tip apparently got stuck in a leg-bone and snapped... didn't see that one coming..

Seriously though, any Spyderco, especially the millie, should have survived the chicken, but allas, a freak accident, no doubt. What do I do now? I am not sure how to go about getting it fixed, since I've never had to have a Spydy fixed before. I take it I am to ship it out to the States, to have the blade replaced? Or is the blade alone so expensive that it would be cheaper to buy a new one? How much is a blade alone anyways? Could this still be covered by warranty, though I have had it for over a year and lack a receipt?

Will have to use my Para for the moment... will do, but I do want to see it fixed.

Thanks, Paul.

Spyderco Warranty and Repair can regrind the blade. I think they charge a nominal fee but it should look good as new - just slightly shorter.

just throwing in some info
bones are very strong & flexible (bird bones in particular), muscle is also a very strong tissue, if you accidently twist the blade inside or bend it, tip breakage is likely.
you didn't say which steel you military was, i'm guessing 440v, i know it has less tolerance to bending & can be more brittle than s30v

Nope...

it really was the S30V, adding to my surprise...

4 s ter, thanks for the advice, but I really feel too much of the blade has been chipped off and regrinding won't do; the blade needs replacing. If anyone has any ideas as to the cost and whether any part of this is covered by warranty, I'd sure like to hear them.

Thanks, Paul.

hi Paul,

here's my advice:

- send the Mili to me along with some cash for shipping-costs. i'll regrind it for you (you said 4mm? that's nothing......!)

- buy another Mili as a fresh start :D

good luck,

Man I know bones are really hard, but **** an S30V Military! Thin tip and all that does not sound right . I would contact Spyderco and get a new blade. You can count on them doing the right thing.

I know my Manix in S30V is not the same blade shape as the Military S30V but I doubt bone would chip the point off my Manix.

I have had several heavy impacts on the tip, even digging through crushed stone to find a screw I dropped to a new door I was installing.
,the tip was not hurt by this. The Manix was dull as all **** but no chipping in the blade edge. I have pryed a few things also with no damage. Cutting up even hacking up chicken parts did nothing to it.

S30V steel seems really strong to me.

I suppose though with the right angle and enough force you will chip the point off? I have heard of several points being broken on the Military model, and I would agree the Manix is a bit more stout looking than a Military. The Mili point does seem thin to me but I also have a Ronin now thats a needle point on the Ronin!

The tip should not have snapped off just from a chicken bone. Perhaps there was an issue with the heat treatment?

Lol indeed, but Jimd and LJK seem to have valid points: perhaps indeed something was wrong with the blade to begin with, perhaps the steel itself or indeed the heat treatment; I mean, come on, S30V Millie vs. a dead chicken...

Is Sal still around, reading these posts? Wouldn't mind his two cents..

Call warranty and repair and talk to them( can never remember the new girls name :( ) they will fix you up. Old 440V blades for a millie only ran 25 bucks plus shipping so even buying a new blade is not that bad...though I doubt you will have to pay. Just my thoughts though. Let us know how you make out?????Take Care!!!!
