What the heck did they send me?

I resently ordered a Spyderco Calypso Jr. Light weight with the G-10 blade(plain edge flat grind) from an online store.

Here is what they sent me--A calypso jr., full serrated blade flat grind,AUS-8 blade. The handle is not the fishscale LW. I'm not sure what the handle is made of I think it might be a micarta material. The box had some printing on it and a date of 10/97.

Any ideas what this handle is made out of.

Also I do like the feel of the handle (smooth)and I don't have a serrated blade so I am thinking of keeping what they sent me.

I may call them though because I think I may owe them some money because I think this knife might be more expensive

Sounds like the original Calypso Jr. before the lightweight version. It is a micarta handle, and those knives, I believe, have been discontinued. It is alittle more then the FRN version, but worth it. Some think it is one of the best knives Spyderco makes.

I really wanted the calypso jr ltw with that g-10(I think it's g-10)plain blade.A lot of people here say that blade is awesome.
But is it really that much better? Also I'm not sure about that serrated edge it seems to tear rather than cut.

If you are not used of the serrations, I found that a short blade with serrations is a little harder to get used to. I have the same knife and certainly can't complain about the cutting ability. Its a great little knife..

You probably received a C52BMS. Both the plain and serrated micarta models started out as CX03 (x=experimental). Then they were called Dragnet. Finally they were named Calypso. When discontinued (the micarta version) the retail was 84.95.

If you want a plain blade model call Wright Knife at 1-800-400-1980 and ask for Dennis (the owner). He had them in stock. If he is out we still have a few that he can get from us.

Mark,
I just noticed that you mentioned above, wanting a Calypso Jr Lightweight with G10 handle. It is only available with a FRN (Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon Resin) handle.

I believe they are talking about the VG-10 steel used on the light weight Calypso. Not the handle material. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

John- It does say X= experimental on the box.
and the handle does appear to be some sort of fiberglass.

Blades- thats right I wanted the VG-10 steel blade because of all the hype I've been reading on it's cutting ability and it is supposed to hold a edge longer.

Two more questions I like the FRN handle, it's smooth and their are no annoying rivets to dig into your hand. What are the differences between the micarta vs the FRN.
And is the VG-10 better than the AUS-8.To me better means stays razer sharp longer.

Anyway this knife feels wonderfull I'm keeping it.

Thanks to all for the education!!!

Mark,

As far as I know the CX03 only had the micarta handle. The same knife with a stainless steel handle was the CX04 (now C52P or C52S).

Regards your questions about FRN vs micarta and the blade steels, I'll leave those answers to Sal or the other experts.

Good luck and enjoy!
