how do u rate a "used" knife? I have a very beautifull 50/50 Spyderco C23 Renegade, slight scratchmarks on the metal clip, but blade is flawless. Is this a popular knife for collectors? Anyone have an idea what it would fetch on bay, or should i keep it as an investement?

Any thoughts?

Well on the one hand, John Jensen still shows 7 serrated edge Renegades in stock at a price of $78 each. Paid about that for my PE a few months back, then watched one sell on eBay a few weeks back for more than double that amount. Probably worth holding on to, more likely to go up in value than down. As for rating knives, I'd rather see a description, like "slight scratchmarks on the metal clip, but blade is flawless" than wonder if someone elses idea of "mint", "excellent", or any other term was the same as mine. Funny example...

Saw a knife on eBay described by the seller as "virgin", who then goes on to say he cut himself with it while taking the auction pictures! Now, me, I don't think I could refer to a knife that had drawn blood, especially mine, as virgin without laughing myself silly.

Have to admit it was me who bought the C23 PE for good money on Ebay. It didn't do my domestic credit any good either!!!!. PE knives ,especially linerles ones do go quite high on Ebay. The CE and SE ones are cheaper, bought a mint SE liner C23 as an EDC. I think it was about $60.

I hear you Phil, eBay has been a mixed bag for me. Have won some I considered real bargains, and probably overpaid on others where my desire to fill a void in my collection got the better of my judgment. I'd agree with your observation regarding the relationship between edge types and prices, and would be inclined to extend it to almost all :spyder: models. With the possible exception of Civilians, I'm hard pressed to think of one where serrated or combo edged specimens consistently bring higher prices than plain edged. Yet, even with that, eBay's still such a craps shoot that it's next to impossible to predict what any given piece will fetch.

Hi Deacon
There's another PE linerless Renegade on Ebay now. I think it is the same vendor as last time, just had him confirm it was not a later(liner type) knife. It will be interestig to see how this one goes.

Not sure, I can't honestly say I've ever seen a Renegade or a BlackHawk with a liner. Maybe I just never looked closely enough since, based on Phil's reply, I have to assume they were made. Generally speaking, whichever "flavor" is the least common would be the most "collectable". For a user, on the other hand, if you are right handed and like to use the clip, the liner is a major plus, since screws strip out of linerless G10 quite easily. For those of us who are left handed, a single liner is just added weight, since it's inevitably on the wrong side.

Hi Guys
Seems the PE knives are the ones that attract good money(if that equates to collector interest) I have aquired all my renegades at under 100$US except the linerless PE. SE knves go for around the 70-80 mark, however someone wanting to fill a gap in their collection will often pay a premium.
Regards
Phil

PS The Renegade still ranks as on of my favourite Spyderco knives. :spyder:

Renegade imposter???

Post by JD Spydo »

Very interesting. I have an older Renegade that I carry for everyday. It has the aforementioned combo-edge. It also has a stainless liner. I went and looked at an older Renegade and my older Blackhawk ( both in the old black & white boxes) and neither one of them have a liner. I know I can hear you guys saying " DuuHhh!!!". Well I guess since I have joined the great :spyder: forum I keep learning something old every day. Are the ones without the liners worth anything? I think I got $50 each in them. The one I carry everyday with a liner I paid $48 for on EBAy. Like the old Led Zepplin song: I am " Dazed & Confused". Any comments???? :spyder:

Liner For Renegade???

#10

Post by JD Spydo »

I have one other question about the Renegades with or without the liners. I bought a Blackhawk ( little Renegade) about 3 months ago on EBay. I think I paid right at $60 for it. It comes in a newer dark gray Spyderco factory box instead of the box the older model came in. Now this one has a liner like my EDC Renegade ( with liner) that I mentioned in my previous comment. Was there a timeline when they started making the Renegade & Blackhawk with liners. I take it the older models ( like the ones in the old black & white factory boxes) didn't originally have liners. To feel both varieties in your hand is almost a day & night difference. Can anyone shed any significant light on this confusing dilema. :spyder: ????????

The older models came out in or about 1995 , that was when I bought mine. My screws came out at the ROS 95. It should be about 1997 when the liners came out.*

Edit to add.. I bought the Black Hawk in 1995 and was taken to the ROS '95

I have all models in the Black Hawk and Renegades in Liner and linerless models. I think these models are awesome. Too bad they are getting life now than in 1995.

Well thank you "Ceya" for the pertinent information on the Renegade/Blackhawk history. Do you think the linerless ones will be as collectible as the ones with liners? My EDC Renegade with the liner sure is a tough old soldier. I just wish it had a different blade steel than GIN-1. :) :spyder: :)

Aloha ALL!

Reagardless of collector value, liners, linerless, etc...

The RENEGADE is one of my ALL time favorites...I thought it was the coolest :spyder: when it first came out...

My brother in CA now is the owner of my Renegade CE, single liner...I hope he likes it as much as I DO. ;)

I think linerless will be collectable.. I think they are now since they are not made in more and are first run products.
