KOT: Kitchen shears recommendation
Hello there brothers and sisters of the edge. It is Missus Rorschach's birthday in September, and I am looking for recommendations on a good set of kitchen scissors/shears. Aside from the paring knife, this is her #1 kitchen tool by far. She has worn out 3 sets in our marriage thus far (all cheap stuff.)
I am looking for heavy duty, and good edge holding. Let me know your opinions, and thanks!

Are you looking for take apart, old style shears, or just some scissors for use in the kitchen? In the take aparts, I like the Messermeister kitchen shears; I think the part number is DN-1040. These are also marketed by Buck as the 815. If you want a non-take apart shear, my faves are the Wusthof Trident 5556's. Henckels' scissors are better than their knives, so you can't really go wrong there, either. Just don't get the ones with the the plastic jar gripper. They're pretty lame. The ones you want here would be 43944-000 or 43967-000.
Amazing how easy it is to get part numbers when one posts from work.

RAT, I hear ya, I wish we had some Sal scissors!
Thanks Haji, very good advice. Being a typical overspender on sharp items, I decided to get her two sets. One set of Wusthof and also a set of larger nickel-plated poultry shears. The latter look very heavy duty, so they may become my favorites.

Sounds like you've already got the goods, but if you ever get a chance, buy a set of the Cutco kitchen shears. You can find them on Ebay for a decent price. They're pretty impressive. Couple of things that come to mind are thathey come apart for washing, my original set is still super sharp without any sort of resharpening and if you don't mind risking part of the edge, they're tough enough to cut through a penny. I've seen the penny thing done by this neighbor of mine that "briefly" thought she would be able to earn extra money selling Cutco. Not ....

Tim,
Try the Cutco ... I'm serious man.. You won't believe the utility and the ease of the clean-up you'll fine with those shears ... I've tried Chicago Cut, Henkel's ...and several others.
I don't have the Kershaw ... , but ..., the Cutco is an old established tried and true design ... and chuckling .... it will slice through the penny ... I saw it... And I actually had to do a repeat ............ personally ... Same set... She was sweating bullets when I went for it... grinning ... The 2 sides of the penny just go flying .... grinning ....

In this age of the credit / housing market
bubble you might want to look for something
from -
www.eKnifeworks.com
Anything recommended here is there, only for
a better price ( check out their selection as well )
Or call'em : 1-(800)-251-9306
They can also recommend something durable, yet affordable - better to $ave that lucre
for the next "bargain basement" - the market.

Alright Steve, I think I'll take your word for it and give the Cutcos a whirl! I'm guessing these must be the model you're talking about:
