The past few days in the prison have been very active.



--Friday, in one cell that housed two inmates, five shanks were found, along with approx. 25 bottles of home-made wine.



--Sunday, inmates were fighting on E-Block.



--Monday, more inmates were fighting on E-Block.



--Tuesday, more fights on E-Block.



--Today...Two inmates were trying to kill each other on H-Block, both were armed. One was going for a shank in the shower, while the other inmate had a broomstick. Fortunately, officers arrived and locked one inmate in the shower, containing him. They then had to wrestle him into submission while disarming him of his shank. The other inmate was also disarmed and both went to the hole.



--Later today, more fighting on H-Block, big response by officers.



--Also today...I got a tip that there were a large number of shanks in the yard right next to where I work. I called the Search Team and let them know. They searched the yard and came back with approx. 25 large shanks, along with a thick wire frame that would have produced about another ten shanks.

The stuff you guys go through is hair-raising. The news media and crap TV shows never seems to show your side of the story and since most people get their sense of the world these days from watching prime time scripted TV, their sense of reality is firmly based on whatever the hack typing thinks will sell rather than reflecting the truth.

You the good guys. Never forget that.

Hi Jim,

Am sure I don't really need to say this, as you and Chad both sound like the kind of CO's I prayed would bid the areas I worked when I was a civilian prison worker, but do keep your guard up. Any change in the atmosphere of a prison, whether it be an increase in "acting out", or a prolonged lowering of the noise level, is usually a bad sign. Hardest part is figuring out what the real "storm" is going to be, as anything can be just a diversion to take your attention away from something else.

Glad I'm where I am now. Still have to deal with the same mix of competent hard working professionals, the clueless, and the lazy, that seems to be a commonality to all government work, but at least here the last two groups don't put anyone's lives at risk.

Add to all this a fight in the yard, as well as a bomb scare this morning in the prison's Mail Room.

For reasons unknown to all of the line officers, our CERT Teams were activated and sent to our Central Office without explanation. Now, we're working short, very understaffed as it is. Because of the CERT activation, things are going to be even more dangerous, as even more staff have been siphoned away from the prison. A very large portion of the officers these days are rookies, who haven't yet "seen the elephant".

Considering all the action of late, many of us are questioning the intelligence of all this. But then we remember that the administration could care less if we live or die, and then it makes sense.

Hi Jim - I know from your report and from what Daywalker (Chad) tells me what you guys have to cope with day in and day out. I salute both of you and all your brave comrades working with you in the correctional system tp care for our society's scum. Please take good care and 'check SIX' at all times. You're right on the money with the above paragraph. The old saying, "It's quiet; too quiet!" is really true!

And I've also seen the diversions you mention. Some of the inmates aren't stupid, and can set up diversions to take attention away from the real battle as it begins.

Guys, thanks to ALL for the kind words, prayers, and encouragement. We appreciate them all, sincerely.

God gives me strength each day, and I make sure my family knows I love them at all times.

Today, as far as I know, was uneventful, despite the fact that the prison was running extremely understaffed. If something had happened, we'd have had to scrape the bottom just to get a response element together.

I believe our CERT units have gone to one of our upstate prisons, where inmates are causing disturbances. The prison is newly opened, and many of the officers are inexperienced.

Today, on D-Block, an inmate began arguing with an officer. The inmate became loudly hostile, threatening the officer with great bodily harm.

Seeing the commotion, several other inmate gathered around, surrounding the officer.

Fortunately, other officers, along with the block sergeant, responded before violence broke out. The inmates who'd surrounded the officer scattered when they saw the cavalry coming, leaving the lone inmate by his lonesome.

The offending ingrate...er, I mean, inmate...was sent to the Hole promptly.

Video tapes of the area were reviewed in an effort to identify the other inmates who had surrounded the officer, but the tape quality was so poor that they couldn't be ID'd.

They did this in the rec yard when they were evacuated from the units they set on fire...****. At least you guys have cameras!

Thank God nobody was injured.
