Tip-up MBC.

#1

Post by Carlos »

Has anyone noticed that every MBC folder that is out or that we know is on the way is clipped tip-down?

Gunting

Chinook

Ayoob

Temperance (all folders)

Now the Gunting design dictates that it be clipped tip-down, but the others are/were open to the designers choice (or so it seems).

Now there are some Spydernuts (including me) whose entire collections are of knives that clip tip-up and whose reflexive (read: fast) draw technique is for a knife thus clipped.

Thus trained by daily habit, I find that any experiments wearing a tip-down knife is exasperating since I automatically draw it upside down -- in the MBC context this would be a dangerous error.

I do not mean to stir up the tip-up vs. tip-down argument, but instead wish to ask if there will eventually be tip-up options in the MBC line in the future?

Hi Carlos.

Some designs are very difficult to turn into both.

The Lil Temperance is tip up/down option. But not left/right.

The Ayoob is left / right, but not up/down.

The Chinook is to be up/down, but the dedicated clip is difficult to design and expensive to tool up for, so all things in time?

Sal!

You made my day! Though my wallet is going to be very unhappy with you. I want all of the Temperance folders. That Chinook is a beast but I'll get one of those too.

Thanks Sal!

Can't wait for the new Chinook. Working on retapping the liners to do a clip flop on it now. Time will tell.

Dear Carlos:

I am also a die-hard fan of tip-up carry for defensive folders and prefer digging my thumb in deep as I draw. In this way draw, opening, and application can flow together with very little grip adjustment.

If your preferred knife doesn't ride tip up, you might want to try drawing by pinching the pivot pin between the thumb and index finger as you draw and pushing slightly forward instead of lifting up. This allows the knife to rotate in the hand and streamlines the grip switch necessary for a thumb opening.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the tip.

Thus far I have been able to abstain from Spyderco's tip-down folders though some are awfully tempting (Military, Starmate, Shabaria, etc). Presently there is only one tip-down folder left in my collection and I intend to give that to a friend.

Obviously we need a Janich MBC folder (wink wink, nudge nudge).

Wow: with Bram, JAK, and Janich, this forum is becoming the MBC guru nexus!

Hi Carlos. Actually, we are looking at a Michael Janich design. It IS tip up. Cannot say more at this time as it is too early in the development stage.

Sorry Sal,

I don't mean to be a thorn in your side over this relatively minor issue -- it is just that no one else seems to have spoken up on it, and that almost all of the high-grade clipits (in-house and custom collab.) were/are tip-down only.

But with ATR, Lil' Temperance, and "Salsa" in development or nearing production, and the possibility of large Temperance, a Janich MBC, Wegner 2, etc., you've already nailed down my knife budget for the next year or more. No más! No más!
