need some good thoughts
I don't kno whow many of you have ever had to deal with the disease anorexia, but my 72 year old mom weighs 71 lbs now.we've seen this coming for a few years.
She appears to eat healthy, but still loses weight.
To make a long story short the culture of being super thin is cool has almost killed her.
Now her bones are crumbling from lack of calcium.
We will be taking her to the University of Charleston medical center and I will be with her until the weekend.
If anyone needs to get in touch with me, my cell # is on my web page.
I will be back on saturday night and will aswer mail then.
Please pray for her to wise up before it's too late. thank you, Ron Cochran

Hey Ron,
My thoughts and prayers for your mom and you are there too.
Though I'm a psychologist who does deal with eating, I'm no expert on anorexia (just the opposite, in fact...obesity). I kind of wonder if there is anything else going on with your mom, given her age. Could she have some other metabolic disease which affects her this way? I hope you get a thorough medical checkup for her when you're at Charleston. I know they have great doctors there, and you'll get really good opinions on how to help.
God be with your mom, and you for being a good son.
Dave

Hello
My aunt went through the same situation. She was actually bulimic which meant that though she ate well, she would secretly make herself vomit later when no one was about. In this way she was not giving her body any chance to get any of the required nutrients from the food. When her weight became a problem none of us understood why it was happening.
I became suspicious when following a meal at my mothers house, I heard her being sick and she didn’t even mention it when she came down stairs.
I talked to her about the situation and she told me that she couldn’t stand being fat! She weighed five stone at this time. She explained that no matter how much weight she lost, when she looked in a mirror, she saw a fat person looking back.
To cut a long story short, she went for medical advise and was given counselling and medication to help with the osteoporosis that she had developed. With time and a lot of support from the family she got through it. It is a terrible disease but people, with help can make full recoveries. My thoughts are with you.
Regards Ken

All my best to you.
Be glad it is something that can be fixed.

Hi Ron
Though I have no psychological training like Dave (swede,) my initial impression was the same due to your mom's age. Unless she has had body image issues throughout her life and her body is just becoming less able to cope with the malnourishment as she gets older, it does seem a bit unusual that she would only start showing symptoms of anorexia in the last few years. Hopefully the medical center will have some good insights for her. I would imagine that they have some nutritionists on hand that can recommend a good diet plan for her, perhaps liquid meal replacement supplements would also help provide extra calories and nutrients.
I wish you both the best and commend you for being pro-active. Understanding that everyone loves her and wants to help is an important foundation for your mom's recovery.

My thoughts go out to you and your family. I pray that you find a way to help your mother. I too had a friend who was anorexic and I am not sure if I ever got through to her. She is better now, but just because she made it through herself rather than through my or somebody elses help. However, never give up trying. She told me later, that the fact that other people cared... for her, not so much for her disease, gave her the strength to overcome the disease eventually.
