Dear Karnigy:

Spyderco tests the locks on all its knives with a hydraulic press hooked to a computer sensor. It precisely measures the pressure at which the lock fails.

My understanding is that an MBC-rated lock has to withstand 200 pounds of pressure per inch of blade length. As such, the Yojimbo with a 3-inch blade must hold 600 inch-pounds of pressure before the lock goes.

Hopefully, I've got all the details right on this. If not, I ask that Sal or one of the engineer types at Spyderco step in and set the record straight.

As for which knives are MBC rated, it's usually the ones that are purpose-designed for MBC use. Look at these knives first and see if it mentions an MBC-rated lock. Usually, this is included in the ad copy.

I hope this helps.

Stay safe,
