WOT - Windows, Mac, or something else?

#1

Post by jbake »

So, I saw that VW's having trouble with his computer. I've been wondering this for a while... Who is using what OS/hardware platform?

Me, well, I'm in a bit of a strange position. I do this for a living, so I'm surrounded by multiple OS & hardware platforms.

3 systems on my office desk - Win XP, Redhat, and a Mac. Same at home, I have one of each.

1/2 our 30+ servers are WIndows the other half linux (just one Mac server).

The tiebreaker (for me) is my notebook - It's a Mac as well.

If I had to pick just one system to use - it would be a Mac - wouldn't even think twice.

if I could surf the net using dos, I would be...

3 yrs of comp science, doing programming, and started on a comp when I was 3, so I grew up running around in dos.

Have a book here for tech support back in the days of dos 3.30 and gw-basic 3.22, back in 88... also find norton comander to be the best tool out there.

Well VW, if you want to try something different, go to
The Knoppix web site> and download a Linux cd image.

Basically, you can boot your computer with the CDROM and it loads up a linux OS. It's not loaded on your PC. When you're tired of playing and want to go back to windows, just eject the disk and reboot.

I was raised on Apple, but now my home LAN contains:

3 Windows XP machines (me, kids, wife)
2 Windows 2000 machines (work 1 and 2)
1 Suse Linux box (me)

Apple makes great products, but I like to build my own systems so that makes it Win or Linux for me.

Started in 1985 (C64 etc.) so have seen a lot. Since it's my work since '92 I'm on the latest Micro$oft OS the most of the time. One fixed computer at home (XP), and a laptop for my wife (2000) and one for myself (XP). All Dell with wireless LAN connected to 512Kb ADSL (can't get any faster due to distance to the PBX)

Apple powerbook G4.

I grew up predominately with Macs but then for the past 10 years or so switched to PCs. Since last May I have now been using a Mac and I would reccomend one to everyone. They are great computers that are easy to use and have far less problems than PCs (in my personal experiences).

I really know very little about any of it.It is amazeing that I can even post a pic.
I have only had a computer for about 4 years but has almost completely replaced TV for me.
The only thing I have had is windows 98 and windows ME.My computer is doing strange things right now,I may have to have my mom,20 years working in programing,to wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything from the back up CDs that came with this computer.

I have an old PC (Pentium I; 233 MHz) so the only acceptable OS is the Win 98.

I've been using computers since 1979 and on the internet since 1992, so I've seen a few operating systems come and go. Heck, I started on CP/M... before DOS.

But I'm running Win XP now on a homebrew AMD XP2200+ machine, and it couldn't be better. XP is everything that Win 3.1 was supposed to be... they finally got Windows right

Ahhh... Slackware.

I have an old Sparc 5 running Slackware 7.3.0. It used to be one of my desktop machines, but I am using it for a DHCP server now.

I just ran "uptime" on it and it has been running for 532 days without a reboot. Try that with a WIntel box. :-)
