Ronin

I really like the looks of the ronin, but I have some questions. First of all, is it legal to carry a concealed fixed blade? If so, what lenghth? Also, I understand that the ronin is a tactical knife, but can it be used as a work knife as well? would the straight edge hinder this?

ok, where are yah? that would help as to carry laws.

I've been carrying my ronin for a while now(3-4 weeks), and I love it. thats kitchen, general and work use.

have a custom sheath done for it, carries above the belt line, small of back.

Last question first: I have always liked straight edges on work knives; easy to use, predictable behaviour when cutting, easier to sharpen, and able to substitute for a scraper or plane. Legal blade length varies by state and country, and the legality of carrying a fixed blade openly or concealed varies also. In Texas, the legal blade length limit is 5.5 inches, and fixed blades may be carried concealed or openly.

I received my Ronin today. The tip is VERY pointy and thin. You have to be careful putting it back into the sheath.
The Ronin slices like a slicingthing. I used it for tomatoes at lunch time - incredible!
The fit and finish is excellent and the Micarta scales are great looking.
I would not produce this knife around sheeple - the Ronin looks too agressive.

Some factoids :

The recent article in TACTICAL KNIVES
by Jerry Van Cook highly recommends a
Ronin ( which, according to his research,
literally means "wave tossed man" in Japanese ) Keep in mind, karnigy, the local
cops don't harass people generally speaking.

They WILL, however -

Shake you down if you've caused problems.

Stop you if you were brandishing it in front
of "sheeple" ( and frightened the sheeple )

Usually use that "four fingered rule" ( about 3" blade length ) which the Ronin BTW
passes.

Local & State ordinances are often ignored
in many circumstances...it's your demeanor
that'll cause problems.

Here's a coupla sites for the best price :

www.1SKS.com

&

www.BestKnives.com

Both around $100. Mike @ Bestknives'll ship
any way you chose ( UPS, USPS Priority,FEDEX
( if I remember right ))

I'd recommend a subscription to TACTICAL
KNIVES just for Jerry Van Cook's articles
on dealing with his brother officers.

Or, check, I think Paladin Press has some
books he authoured :

www.Paladin-Press.com

But, buy'em from -

www.Amazon.com

Amazon has'em used & new for a better
price than Paladin ( the publisher ).

"e" me the State you live in ( or country )
I can research your law part for you.

The Ronin is a very nice knife. I've been tempted to buy one, but the thin tip is a concern of mine. Does anyone know what, if anything Spyderco would do to solve a broken tip on it provided it was broken under normal use?

Mt.Goat -

According to what I've read, if done under
"normal use" it would either be ground back
into a "tip" shape -or- replaced for like $5
shipping.
