Dutch Spyderco Show Report

#1

Post by Ted »

* BUMP & EDIT * - 3/3/2014 - I fixed the pictures in this thread of the first spyderco meet in 2004 for a fun trip down memory lane. :)

In the old forum the number of pics in a post were unlimited, in the new forum it is limited to 10, so you'll have to click the links for the last pics

Enjoy

The Dutch Spyderco Show 2004

Well, First, a big thank you to Sal & the crew and Jurphaas for arranging this great evening.

We met at 18:00 at the Navy base in Amsterdam with approx 10 forumities.

Sal talked for about half an hour about the Spyderco company and the knife industry which was very interesting.

Then, Sal talked us through numerous new models, prototypes and concept models. All models went around the table so we got to handle and inspect everything!

We started with the blue and black Joyimbo

Then, the long awaited Para Military, with 4mm (!) blade (same as normal Military), and a small Spydie logo engraved on the blade (very nice!). This one fitted my hand like a glove!

A couple of amazing concept Fred Schempp models were shown. Can't talk anymore about these.

Edit 3/3/2014 - I believe this was a Rock Salt Prototype

We got to handle the UK Spyderco Penknife. A Calypso size G-10 slipjoint with a very low carry tip-up wire clip. A very nice knife. Good ergonomics and because of the choil is very unlikely to ever close on your hand. There are some special design considerations in this model!

The big Spyderfly was there, and a concept model of a smaller one. Also a very special one....

The new sprint run of the Spur, with grey kraton inserts, PE VG-10 steel, and a normal (Co-Pilot) sized clip. Also a bit thinner then the current Spur.

Next were some new ideas on the Lil Temperance.

There was a Stainless Steel ATR with VG-10 blade. A new J. Keating folder with Chinook style lock but a more spearpoint blade.

Then, the Kopa was there. Not a big Kiwi, also not a modified Dragonfly, but something in between. Look for yourself. It will come out with lots of different handle materials

Some more concept models were shown. It's not sure if these will go into production, so don't bug your dealer about it.

An FRN Kiwi, a new Pro-Grip (bigger, more suitable for hunting, skinning & caping).

Edit 3/3/2014 - I guess this was the Stretch

A concept model of the 'BIG' folder was there. Very BIG indeed. Some new locks were discussed. A proto/concept of a small Howard Viele was shown.

Edit 3/3/2014 - I guess this was the Bison, still not released :)

The following is a medium sized fixed blade, with an integrated cover which snaps over the edge, or dissapears in the handle. Very ergonomic handles!

Then we went in the photo-shoot / chit-chat / auto-graphing stage and talked about lot's of stuff.

So it was a perfect evening and again thanks to Sal, crew & Jurphaas for arranging it!

I got back at home just 30 minutes ago from the show, so I probably missed something in this report but the others will probably fill that in.

Enjoy,

Ted

ps. All pictures were taken with permission from Spyderco

Thank you for sharing your good fortune. I'm even more excited about the Para-Military now, 4mm! Excellent! Great shots of the other knives too!

Ted, you just rule as usual. Many thanks indeed for the pics.

What's the new ideas for the Lil Temp?

Did you get a pic of the Spearpoint Chinook?

So much cool stuff!

A great evening it was. To handle dozens of Spydies, of which some were indeed one-off's from Schempp, and some pre-production, was a real privilege. I'd love to announce one or two knifes that may cause lots of interest but we were to told to keep our mouths shut.

:-)

So there. A knife-company couldn't be run by nicer people BTW! I'll start saving up again...

WOW!

Thanks, Ted, for letting us into your meeting with Spyderco -- really great!

Thanks to Jurphaas' like Ted said, for making the arrangements, so we could all get a look at some of the new <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>wares!

The Paramilitary looks SHWEEET! I like the black G-10 on the yojimbo (yes, I prefer black.). More from Ed Schempp -- I can't wait (I'm imagining Persian success all over again)!
