Hypothetical: Stranded in the woods

#1

Post by Luvbug »

Ok, here's the scenario:

You are placed in the middle of the woods, with no map, compass or navigational clues. Even if you did, you don't know which way gets you closer to civilization. In short, you are hopelessly lost and are likely to remain that way for some time...

You have only the clothes you wear, a canteen, a disposable Bic lighter, and the Spydie of your choice...which would it be?

Which would it be if it could only be a Spydie folder?

Which would it be if it could only be a Spydie you would normally carry as an EDC?

That's a good question, Luvbug.

If it could be any Spydie I doubt between a folder (Military, Chinook, Lil'temperance, ATR) or a fixed blade (Fred Perrin, Bill Moran or Temperance).

If it could be an EDC I would take the Dodo.
Actually that one isn't my EDC yet. I ordered one from our forumite and Spydie-dealer Jurphaas, and when it arrives I'm quite sure it will turn out to be a perfect EDC for me.

I would have to say the S30V Military on both accounts.

I'd take my SS SE Harpy, as it's the only Spyderco knife I currently own.

Probably the PE Native I'm currently trying to destruct test <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Edit: That I just broke the tip off.

<quote>You have only the clothes you wear
</quote>

and what if those clothes contain more???

I carry a zippo, cell phone, green lightstick, and stainless flask on me... not to mention the number of knives and a multi...

still, limited to *1* spydie, I'd say it'd be a close one between my temp and moran fixed... forget the folders. Getting a moran kydex rig eventually(whenever eric gets back into business after his latest loss)...

if I had to do a folder, my 50/50 440v military would cover enough ground. The millie was my 75% right/front carry until my calyso jr frn serrated got here.
My edc has twin calypso jr's, 2 fixed, the kiwi, toad, and 'fly, and my lm crunch....

Let's see. I would take a magnetized Terzoula Starmate, hang it from a tree vine so I get true north, untie the knife, take off...and get lost again.

First, a Chinook as a folder, otherwise the Fred Perrin as a fixed blade.

Then as EDC/Surv.Knife, a Pro-Grip, Para Military or a Lil Temp. Can't really carry anything bigger then that here in Holland.

I,d go with a little Temp . Its plenty solid , you might loosen it up a bit but i doubt you would break it . I'd pick it over the Millie. as it isnt a liner lock based life form .A ti Salsa would not be a bad back up . It's a bit awkward but you would be hard pressed to break it .

EDC folder would be Frn Endura PE
Choice of folder would be Millie or something beefy like the chinook I or II
Fixed blade...Perrin possibly the Temp.
Good question! Take Care!!!

I would say CE Military, but my new choice would be the Chinook 2 as the pommel could be used as a makeshift hammer.

If it has to be a knife I own...I'd probably go with my SE CF Delica - that sucker just seems to cut through anything.

Otherwise, the Lil' Temperance looks mighty nice.

Civilian: nothing like an electric glowstick to find stuff... $4 and I've been using this one since october 03. Even chopped this one down to fit in a nylon mini mag pouch. Have a few more in my bag.

timlara: I have a lot of vertical blade play on a PE FRN Native. When I first noticed it I tried to make the lock fail under pressure and couldn't which satisfied me at the time. However, during a quiet time I thought the best way to find out how far I can trust a model would be to test it to destruction. Since the Native was less than 100% (to my twisted little mind) it drew the short straw. Some reviews have complained that the tips of some Spydies are a little easy to chip. Mine broke after the original post above while I was putting mortice holes in 1" pine board. Very small chip though, still **** pointy.

chux: Wow. I'd say that's defintely on the fringe of what the Native was designed to withstand...still pretty impressive! Is it the S30V model? While it takes quite an edge, I'm a little suspicious that S30V can be prone to chipping. I managed to take a tiny chip out of the tip of my Dodo trying to wedge it under a tough plastic baler strap, but it was small enough that I was able to buff it out when sharpening, so it didn't really alter the blade profile or anything...

Yep, it's an S30V model.

Did a lot of wood planing and chopping also cut down lots of thick card boxes. Took the edge off finally by shaving chunks of steel off a spoon and sharpened it up easily to shaving sharpness (on Double Stuff). Was going to try splitting wood (boards again) with it but had no baton to hand. Lock up is nice and tight, certainly not changing my mind as to the model I was going to be stranded with.

I think it has earned a rest for the night now.
