Going on vacation soon, with my wife, son and some other close friends . Alas it will be a knifeless vacation as the cruise lines will not let you take anything sharp aboard, period. The last time we went on a cruise I had my co-pilot with me as a money clip, no problem. mabey it's just me but I always like to have at least one spyder somewhere about my person, When I can't carry one I feel like I am missing part of my clothes. Sometimes this post 9/11 security I think is taking away the rights of law abiding and responsible citizens, on the other hand the security people who are trying to make this world safe for us have a tough task, one which I think they are doing outstandingly well so I guess in the long run it's ok, just tough getting used to the change, it's a tough call, though. Do they actually have metal detectors?
If not, I'd do the dragonfly.
If so, just buy something at your first port of call and throw it in with your souveniers.

yup, they have metal detectors. i went on a cruise last spring. if u happen to buy a knife while ashore somewhere you have to give it to them when u return to the ship until the cruise is over.

forgot about my card, swisstech utilikey, and buck minitool...

keys went in the basket, wallet went throught the scanner... none of those 3 toys were picked up.

Vacation eh? Metal detectors? They take all knives until till the cruise is over?

I just went in a court room the other day with a metal detector "car accident my wife had 1 1/2 years ago,long story but good outcome".I had my keys and my Military on me and not even a beep.

I once entered the German Bundestag (parlementbuilding) in Berlin with my CoPilot. Everything got checked: X-ray for bags and stuff and a metal detector to walk through. They didn't notice my CoPilot (fortunately).

I always have a Victorinox Swiss Army Classic attached to my keychain. That should get by without too much alarm. I would pack it in your bag til' you get to your room. The only time I don't have one is when flying or entering courthouses. I had to fly down to Sacramento the other day with just carry-on bags. At the first chance I went and bought another knife to carry. Some people feel naked without clothes. I feel naked w/o a knife.

I guess the best advise is not to take any knife, unless you don't mind loosing it. Does anyone know whether you can check your knives with the cruise line to be returned after the trip?

You could just steal a knife at dinner and grind your own "shiv" once you get on board.

Along this line, I'll need to paraphrase. I believe Samuel Clemens said something to the effect that, "An ocean cruise is like a term in prison, with a better chance of drowning".

It does point out the "constraining" nature of public transportation in our society these days.

I wouldn't enjoy a cruise without (at least) one of my trusty knives.
How about the Mini Police necklace? I guess this one could make it even to the plane <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
OTOH, I've seen some zytel knives concealed as hair brushes and combs.

I hope you don't comb or brush your hair in the dark. You might accidently shave your head!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can't have everything. And if you do, you're missing something.

Because I work in a prison, I've seen just about every conceivable place that people try to hide contraband.

With that said, I'd suggest sticking the knife down into your groin. People are very reluctant to grope around your groin area during a search.

They can X-Ray your baggage, but they can't really X-Ray your body, so you might just make it.

I think security measures like this are akin to the Gestapo of the 1940's.
