Take a look at your new Calypso Jr. (grey)...

Does the blade sit crooked in the handle? When the blade is closed on mine, the tip of the blade touches the inside of the handle. When the blade is open, you can tell the blade has a bit of a curve in it. I emailed NGK and Mary Beth responded that all the new Calypsos they got in have this trait. I can return it and get my money back, but I like the ergonomics of the knife too much. This is why I'm posting, to see if others have this problem as well. I wonder if I mail the knife to Spyderco they can "straighten" the blade. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hmm, maybe I got lucky. Here are 2 shots of mine closed. It definitely sits to the "left" somewhat, but does not touch the handle. Notice that I carry with clip lefty-style, so I open the blade with pressure on the opposite side.

Mine sits closer to one side than the other, butt you can push it to either side as there is some flex in the handle. I can see no curvature in the open blade by eyesight. The snap is fine and closes from an inch out. The open position is tight with no play in any direction.
As fine a $40 knife as I have ever bought.

Mine's ok too. The blade sits a tad to the side, but I've come to expect this in FRN models.

There is a definite "tick" of the kicker hitting the blade tang when closing, so I know it's not making contact with the inside of the handle.

Sounds hard to repair, but a call to Mike in customer service may not be a bad idea.

Mine Calypso Jr. blade also nearly touches the handle. And I just held a straight-edge-ruler to the blade, the blade is curved! I'll try and snap a photo.

Mine, which I got through NGK, is perfect. Blade is centered in the handle and I can hold the egde of a steel rule against either side of it without light leaks.

First picture is obvious.
Second is the edge closest to the handle when closed.
Third is the edge farthest from the handle when in the closed position.

The blade is not curved like I first thought. It is just ground Off-Center if that makes sense.

Bought 4 from NGK, had to return 3 for just that same reason. See I'm not the only one who had some QC problems! The 3 that NGK exchanged are not perfect, but are much better. It's a nice knife once you get a good one. I'd return it to NGK. Mike and Mary Beth are super to deal with and you'll probably get a better turnaround time than from Spyderco Customer Service.

I have the same problem on mine; HOWEVER, it is not a new problem.

3 or so years ago, I noticed the same problem in my first FRN Calypso, Jr. In a post on this, Sal stated it had something to do with the heat treat process and was not a defect.

I don't have a problem with it as I plan on using mine.

One way to correct it, if you can put up with it, is to move the clip to the other side. This will realign the blade more to the center.

Mine sits <i>slightly </i> to the left, but no biggie for me since there are no problems with opening/closing/lockup. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Hmmm... now that I look at my "old" black handled Jr. the blade tip is slightly off center. No effect on operation, so I'll just have to avoid staring at it.

Thanks for all of the great responses. The knife in question functions fine (opens and closes correctly without hanging up on the handle), but the blade is definitely curved. If you lay the blade on the edge of a table you can the curvature easily. I'll send the knife back to NGK with a note saying I want the replacement to be checked before being shipped out to me...there has to be a better one at NGK. I doubt they will reimburse my shipping charges so this problem is going to cost me at least another $10. It is quite annoying because otherwise this is an incredible knife. Even though it is not a officially a "defect," in my mind it is. This particular knife shouldn't have made it past quality control. Unfortunately it will tarnish my image of Spyderco a bit.

Just now after I posted I was able to download Roguesouls' pics and that is representative of what the knife looks like. As you can see it is a cosmetic flaw, not a functionaly flaw. It is something I would expect from a "second" but not a first rate Spydie.

Roguesoul- Are you keeping your's or returning it back to NGK?

Great, with all ya'll returning crooked ones to New Graham I guess I'll have to order one somewhere else to keep from getting one of your returns <img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

luv2bikewny,
At this point I haven't made up my mind. Maybe Sal will jump in here.

My Calypso was a gift from my girlfriend, because although I didn't need the knife I've wanted one for quite some time.

On the plus side, the knife does function without rubbing, it's completely smooth when opening and the lock-up is solid. It's razor sharp! The Calypso is lighter and thinner than my Natives and is a welcome addition to my arsenal.

Mine came from NGK's but I am reluctant to burden Mike D. with this "problem". If a perfect knife is offered as a replacement I will not hesitate to spend the money on shipping. Fortunately my other Sydercos take care of all my cutting tasks completely and I am more than happy with them.

Good Luck.

I don't have a gray Calypso jr. <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> but I do have a black one <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>. It is very slightly curved to the left, nothing to affect functionality. The swedge on the spine was also uneven (larger on the right side) but I solved this with a wheel bufer.
The FRN Calypso jr. remains one of my favorite knives.

Mine is dead center of the scale but I did ask that she check this and blade play before shipping it.I have seen a couple of the black ones with the curve. It was slight and you really had to look to see it.I don't think of it as a problem unless it is bad enough to affect function or it is so curved that you can see it easally.
