I've always loved the Russian/Polish style knives - even when the ZT0452 Sinkevich.

so I'm not the only one that ignores the brass guards?

I usually put the cover halfway on to provide a handle, but don’t bother removing the rods. One more repetitive task ignored. I suppose I could just remove the rods, then the top cover would lay flat.
