They are called futomaki ("fat roll") and they are authentically Japanese. You don't have to eat it in one bite but you can if you don't mind looking like a chipmunk. Most maki have no wasabi.

Re: Folding knife for food or use in restaurants
Whenever I have to cut a steak while at a restaurant, I do use my knife. Usually, I'll bring a knife expressly for that purpose if I know beforehand. More often than not, it's a Shamwari or a custom "steak scalpel"
ETA: and I never use a serrated knife on a steak if I can help it. Serrations just tear and rend, most of the myoglobin ends up on the plate.

Victorinox Weekender (serrated Spartan), which is my goto in the bag for decade+ or Victorinox Cheese hardwood front serrated (best for picknicks, locked main blade). They both will not patinaed from sauces and wet wiped with ease. Or, Ladybug full SE for steaks. Short blade though, not scary.
3" and more one hand openers typically scares visitors. From my 10+ years experience no complains for vics at all.
Haven't seen restaurants with dull knives can't cut meal or where garson will refuse to change for a sharper one though.

For futomaki you squeeze it and eat it in one or two bites. Just like you don't try to fit a whole hand roll in your mouth at once.

Dang, no sushi on Mondays.

Re: Folding knife for food or use in restaurants
A friend of mine who just retired after 25 years of active service in the US Army uses his pocket knife to cut food at restaurants (I do too, but this story is about him). The first time he did this with his wife, she commented on it and his reply was, "I'm in the eff-ing Army."

I use my Dfly salt at bbq places a lot too. I've got a beard and don't like coating it in BBQ sauce. I cut the meat off the ribs.

Re: Folding knife for food or use in restaurants
It is Wednesday where I am. In that case I could ask for a hamburger and gladly pay you next Tuesday.
This thread has lots of variables but for me I usually carry my Bradley 2 and the blade has a tiny bit of synthetic motor oil on it to prevent corrosion since it is M4. I’m not sure I want that in my burger.
With that said I will agree there are times when having a suitable knife on hand will help with food prep or eating. Again it depends on the location. Pulling out a Yojumbo to cut smaller pizza slices will attract attention in a city. Out in the country, not as much.

Slightly off topic but I used my Crucarta PM2 to carve the Thanksgiving Turkey at the in-laws. They literally had no sharp knives!
Re: Folding knife for food or use in restaurants
Just used my Lil' Native to cut up waffles at a wedding dinner (PE, thick paper plates). They had only supplied polystyrene forks. Worked well, and the blade was just long enough for the job.

Howdy all,
Interesting discussion. I use my Buck 110 for kitchen work. Never worried about it. Works great and I just wash it when finished. I would not have a problem using my pocket knife at any restaurant. That’s what a knife is made for anyway.

I've been looking into knives that I can bring to cut sandwiches etc - I'm usually getting food with friends in a group setting where we go to a bunch of places, grab some things and share them. Was thinking of something like a Pacific Salt - (no rust issues, can always clean it up when I get home), but then I remember I have a Kapara - alistair phillips designed it originally so he'd eat more veggies - I should just put that into service. Need to check if it has milled out liners. The SpydieChef would be perfect if it was a bit longer in the blade

I miss sushi. I was going to ask you and sal and Naperville and Mushroom if you guys think I can safely eat it. A person I know scared me out of eating it by saying no matter how quality the place is I am risking parasitic worms and the only cure is to take ivermectin. He sent me articles with pics of infected people. He said all it takes is one bite so I should stick to cooked fish only.Danke wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2025 8:47 pmIt was a really good lunch but they didn't have futomaki!PMBohol wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2025 7:06 pm

I just enjoyed a fantastic grilled ribeye steak and cut it up with my 15V Military 2. The negative blade angle and belly make these great steak knives.
