At the end of the day burnt Orange is just a colour in the plastic. It’s nothing that particularly excites me.
What would concern me is how a steel HT’d to circa 70 HRC is going to perform in the real word of cuttin’ stuff:
How would the blade’s edge react upon receiving a small, unintentional impact from something hard?
Would it be overly fragile this low geometry?
Can it’s microstructure cope with the rigours of day to day use?
Would Spyderco provide any assistance to me if it breaks or gets damaged when I use it within the realms of where I would a expect knife with a more conventional steel to perform perfectly fine?

TBH, I would keep it as more of a collector piece if that were a concern. I want Spyderco to be releasing these exotic steels and if they have to warranty them in some sort of outstanding way and/or tie up extra resources helping people out of jams, we probably aren’t gonna see as many of them. So I’d much rather take the L if I do something goofy and chip my edge. If it means a long night at the stones once in a blue moon, so be it.

I’m just not a fan of companies covering user error under warranty. In my life, fishing gear has taken the biggest hit. We’ve seen the prices of decent fly rods and bass rods skyrocket in recent years because companies have started implementing these extravagant warranties in order to compete with eachother. And again, I’d rather pay $500 up front then buy a new one if I goof up as opposed to $1100 for the same product with some warranty that I’m probably never gonna use anyway.

So they're building insurance into the price...which benefits careless people, and penalizes the prudent, it seems to me. "Safety-nettism."

AKA "The CalyFRNia Tax".

Wonder which new Sage 5 variant drops first.

I am really happy to see the Sage getting a resurgence. The handle is not quite fitting my hand, but it is one of the smoothest compression locks that Spyderco makes. Thumbs up from me for this.

From looking at revel 15 it appears that these new REX 121 Sages are not Sprint runs?

That's a great question. I am really excited to see it in G10. Though the Taichung LW pattern is my favorite.

They weigh about the same but the G-10 is $45 more at dealers: $255 for FRN and $300 for G-10.

Put me down for a LW S5 Rex 121! The Sage doesn't excite me like the Caly does, but in the meantime, it's a good substitute.

Gonna be hard to justify picking up another sage 5, but man those orange G10 scales are sweet!

Simply adjust the edge angle to suit your needs? If I had to get one, I'd run it with a 20 dps micro bevel, for some insurance...

This was the reveal I was looking for this go around…the fact that they added some spy27 sages is the cherry on top.

I love how much attention the sage 5 has been getting recently as it’s my favorite 3” Spyderco by a long shot. Still waiting on cruwear, though…that’s gonna be a whole ‘nother ballgame…

The Spy27 version definitely on the must have list but I do have reservations about the Rex121 - it’s probably not going to be the steel for me. More of a collectors piece than a user? I don’t know but it’s still great that Spyderco has given us the option though.

I am definitely excited about the 121, something neat about it. Being the SPY27 was announced at the same time it’s interesting to see the pretty large price difference between the two, $184 LW vs $255 LW, considering SPY27 while different, is a pretty great steel too. It is comparable to Maxamet though.

Stoked about this one, and you know I'm down for both... But where's the Sage6?

This will be a fun one. Had a Sage 1 in Maxamet and thought it was heavy for its size, so maybe the lightweight version will be just right?
