Fact is mate, we do happen to live in one of the affluent suburbs of Sydney though it hasn’t always been so. I grew up in the inner City slums.
Not really important, but do you feel safer living where you do now than where you grew up?
Tom, those inner City slums I grew up in, no longer exist. They’re now very trendy places that demand top real estate dollar.
I simply have never felt overly threaded in any place I’ve visited here in Sydney or anywhere else in Oz.
I’ve never once felt the need to carry “protection” and very much doubt I ever will.

It's a good thing you don't feel the need since, sadly, your government doesn't allow it.

Same for me, but living in the USA and Europe (never Australia). The highest crime (statistically) city I've lived in was Budapest, and I never felt unsafe walking around late at night there.

I would not do it now, but 10 years ago I would leave my apartment at around 9PM, at 4000 South Halsted in Chicago, walk through Bridgeport, through Chinatown, through the Near South Side housing authorities area for the poor, and walk to Rush Street and hang out with the Beat Cops in 18. I'd call my brother, a CPD Cop, to come visit me for 10 minutes while he was at work, buy a beer or two and walk home at 1AM.
At the time I carried two, Chicago legal knives, <2.5 inch blades. But the crime is off the hook now. Shootings, car-jackings and robberies are back to 1990's numbers and it's nothing to trifle with.

G’day Pilot, there are a lot of things governments don’t allow but it’s erroneous to think we Australian are unarmed.
I can’t quote statistics but most everyone that I know owns guns legally. Several mates own different handguns, again legally. I legally own, at present a .22, a .222 and a 220 Swift. Many of our primary producers (farmers) own semi automatic rifles, again legally.
We just need a reason to own them is all. Hunting, feral control, gun club membership, etc. are reason to own a firearm. I’m scared of the bloke next door is no good reason. As long as your safe will accommodate, you can own as many fireams as you like.
We just can’t walk around town with our firearms slung over shoulders or strapped to hips and for the life of me I can’t think of one reason why I or anyone else would want to anyway.
I couldn’t care less what anyone thinks or does let alone what anyone’s interpretation of freedom happens to be but I certainly don’t feel compromised in anyway because of our gun or knife laws. My mates and I go for a shot anytime we feel like.

Pochi!? You'd be better off just holding it closed in your hand, filling out your fist for a more solid punch. Probably more effective that way and wouldn't get laughed at by your assailant!
If I were to take the question seriously, this is the best suggestion. It's titanium. With the knife closed, let the handle protrude slighty from the bottom of your hand. Hammer fist.

I've heard reports that the Pochi barely functions as a knife (poor flipping action/malfunctioning lock issues), let alone a "self-defense knife"..
A knife would be my last choice for SD.. among knives, the Pochi would be toward the very very end of my list.. but, I suppose it's better than nothing, so if it's what you got, go for it..
This feels like a 2022 challenge. I have to continue to say, it isn’t the size that matters, it’s how you use it. Err… we’re talking about knives right???

G'day Bloke,I knew Aussies could own guns, and that you need a reason to. But from what I know there are more restrictions then you mentioned, such as caliber and barrel length (for handguns) and on capacity as well as many semi auto rifles being flat out banned.
I hope I didn't sound sarcastic, just factual. It's good you don't see the need. Because you can't carry. Or possibly aren't even allowed to use them to defend yourself. From what I understand your Gov't, like Englands isn't too keen on you defending yourself with anything. It may not even be a defense under the law. Is that fairly accurate? If so it's a moot point.
Just because we don't see a need doesn't mean it's not there or will be. There are MANY people in the US that feel the same as you. It can't happen here. Or too me. After 22 years in law enforcement I can tell you that's not true. But the decision should be yours and the option available to you, because sometimes the need just happens.
One quick example that I've seen several times, a woman has a relationship turn violent or a person in your family has the same. And the law, as it usually does, does nothing much to stop the offender. I've seen that professionally and personally. A good friend years ago had to defend his adult daughter from her abusive husband who was armed and coming at them. And not at home. Luckily he was in a state where he could carry. This happened in a semi rural place with NO crime to speak of. Suddenly and very quickly the need is there. That's not neighborhood or city dependant.
It's just VERY nice to have the right. And Americans are lucky to have it. And are doing our damndest to keep it.
And what's a bogan, especially a cashed up one? LOL.

Hey Pilot, no doubt restrictions do exist on barrel length, magazine capacity etc. none impact on my personal requirements as a recreational hunter so I couldn’t say with any authority.
As far as caliber goes to the very best of my knowledge no size restrictions exist. A mate owns a .460 Weatherby another some ridiculous caliber double nitro guns and .50Cal’s are freely available or at least were. Haven’t been inside a Gun Shop in quite a while, though.
Mate, the only true problem with us Australians I reckon is we tend towards apathy, the government plays on it and we ultimately pay the price.

Absolutely! I did that with a lighter once, flame side down. It was sparking off his head hahaha. My friends loved telling that story. Ohh to be 20 years old again

But really, a knife that size it's instantly what I thought of. Multiple benefits that way.

Bloke, Aussies don't have a lock on apathy, Americans are pretty good at it as well.
TomAiello, thanks. I was talking to a very cool Aussie lady on line and she described it just that way! But then muddied it a bit, so nice to know for sure. If only to sound cool when I talk to her. It's hard enough getting her to take the 15 hour flight to the states!
As far as I can tell Bloke Aussies may have a lock on very cool women. Everyone I've met or spoken to on line has been great.

I came here for the Pochi for Self Defense thread. Pochis need self defense like the rest of us. Maybe something Endura size or larger would benefit the Pochi.
If we are taking a poll on crime, I vote No I'm against it.

LOL. Really, very funny. I wonder what the pochi would choose as well. And what system they use to defend themselves.
Yes the thread sort of derailed but at least we all know what a cashed up bogan is!

Isn’t it quite obvious the poochi would pick the canis for self defense. They are both dogs!
