While window shopping online, I noticed that Benchmade and ZT have also raised prices.

For example, on KSF, the Benchmade Mini-Adamas, which used to retail for $212.50, now costs $225.

The ZT 0470 used to cost $260, and is now $280.

I at least saw an announcement last year for the Benchmade and Spyderco increases. I don't follow ZT much so I might have just missed their announcement.

About a 7% street price increase (above examples) is more in line with inflation.

ZT 0308 was $300 in March 2020 and now it’s $320 (+6.67%). Benchmade 945 was $175.25 in April 2021 and it’s still the same price.

I wonder if Spyderco has followed the enthusiast crowd too much. Aside from maybe the Tenacious LW there’s really nothing they can sell to the average consumer who needs a knife to cut things. Even that is steep for entry level. $70 for a Dragonfly!
That's what the Byrd line is for.

Just wait until the new wage demands kick into goods pricing.

I work in manufacturing. Our general labor starting wage a few months ago was $15/hr. That also came with 12 holidays per year, two weeks vacation, and full benefits to include disability supplement coverage on day one. That's emptying chip bins, filling lube sumps, restocking inserts, etc. That is now $19.50 and bumped to $20 if you actually stay six months.

That's going to be hard for a lot of companies to absorb and I doubt many will.

Within the last week or week before I watched videos and read articles, some from WSJ and CNBC on this subject. They're not garbage for a resource and they said that many raw materials increased 50% to 150% over the last year and we are only now STARTING to see the increases. Spyderco has to deal with these price increases no matter what the Feds say the CPI is.

Packages will get smaller, and prices are going UP.

Also, the feds changed the rules on what items are in the CPI last week. They do not want to acknowledge the price increases in the CPI for 2022 so they just dated what the CPI was based on to 2019.

https://www.bls.gov/cpi/notices/2021/20 ... update.htm

Anyone getting increases according to the CPI will now NOT see the increases(For example: retirement benefit increases). This is all because they don't want to embarrass the Feds and White House.

The true CPI is around 29%.

If you love Spyderco, they are going to need your support in 2022. Sales may be rough for many. Find those knives that really tick the boxes! There might be 2 or 3 knives that you did not pull the trigger in 2019. Get them before the next mandatory price hike.

If you did not receive a 6% raise this year, you may have lost 8% of what you make. Used cars, UP 50%! If you have a gig job in mind, this may be the time to add it to your income.

Preppers are talking about the CPI and Inflation. You might think these people are nuts, certainly some of them are "out there" but they are all on the same message.

My main takeaways from this discussion are that I better hang on to all of the Spydercos that I have, I won’t be buying very many more, and I better redirect my income to bullion.

The problem with physical gold and silver is secure storage. You can own it, but can you keep it?

I'll keep buying. I only really started collecting within the last 5yrs and if I sold my collection I'd be making money. Just on retail prices alone I've made around $4000+.

Gold and silver are probably not accruing what common off the shelf items that go through very slow quality improvements like knives, firearms, ammo, .... and you're buying what you like. You may not get to use all of them because the value goes down, but you do get to handle them and inspect them after you drag them out once a month.

I remember when the fans here cried "KNIVES ARE A LUXURY" every time someone called out the price control since 2016. And you know what? You all were right! It IS disposable income, which means I don't have to give Spyderco or any of the other knife companies anything.

Karma is a b**** isn't it? :smlling-eyes

I hope the whole rotten, price-gouging fraud collapses, especially the "retailers."

Yojimbo 2 could be had for $99 for a number of years and at least as late as 2014, so that's actually a ~55% increase in 7 years. This is BladeHq from 2014

I paid a buck less than that in 2012 for mine. It could be misremembering, but it seems like prices didn't jump as much pre-MAP.

You're right, prices did not jump before the MAP, which is a price control.

As a guy who has owned and managed a couple of businesses, and having a degree from a College of Business in Management Information Systems, I do not look at most businesses as predatory.

Sure, go to a Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda, or Harley dealership and pay $1.50 for a screw you could buy in bulk for 5 cents, that isn't fair, but 90% of the retailers do not gouge people like that. How do I know all of this? I've worked in retail and I've owned my own video rental store, and I've owned my own web hosting co.

Perspective is everything.

If you want to talk about predatory pricing then you are welcome to PM me. If you want to troll then please go away. Spyderco isn’t predatory pricing even when I disagree with it.

EDITED: Let there me no mistake, I completely agree with JDW! My comment is directed at JohnDoe99 and in support of JDW.

I've never met Sal and his Wife, or son Eric, but in no way do I think they would even think of it. That is why I'm here and I buy Spyderco Knives.

These are good folks!
