I could be wrong but was there not a recent court case ruling that flicking a knife open by its blade does not make it a gravity knife.

Does anyone have a lexis nexis or westlaw account? Or belong to a university or library that has one

Hmm, maybe if we can combine forces we can figure this out. I don't have lexis nexis or wetlaw but i will use my internet research prowess to see if i can dig anything up. This would be good info for everyone to know seeing as spydies are known for their flicking ability. who the heck opens their spydie that way??

Do not rely on the Internet. Laws change everyday in the courts. We need some one with a Westlaw or Lexis Nexis access in their libraries. Most on Long Island have them except for mine go figure!

This is something Knife Rights should be fighting for us and is the reason I do not give them my money.

A Boker Subcom might be OK , pretty near impossible to inertially open , hard as **** to do a drop with . How about a Leatherman Wave , or Charge , blade is too lite to go inertial on ya . In a belt pouch , and under a jacket it is pretty near invisable . Failing all the above , a Vic. Soldier . Cant flip it , cant do a drop with it .

BTW , what is the law in NYC about near person carry , ie in a daypack , or man bag . The tool would for sure be out of sight , an provided it wouldnt flip ya should be OK ....hopefully

A few years back, I have come close with so call NYC "gravity law" because my two favorate NYC knife stores were raided. I personally know owner of one store (Flushing, New York) and know the employee from other store (Iceberg Army Navy store in down town NYC). All the owners and an employee (who handle the knife section) were charged with "gravity crap". According to all of them NYPD tried to flick open each knife until they got one. All were dismissed after a few nights in jail, years of pain and lost of income. My take is that keep your pivot really tight and keep your folder completely out of sight. All my spidies are really tight. I turned them to FFG and narrow them for lighter blade (harder to flick open when blade is light). Try carry 511 brand instigator and IMHO this 511 Instigator is the hardest blade to flick open considering I have over 50 folders (Spyderco, Benchmade, Boker, etc..)

Could someone tell me how I can tighten my Yo so that you can't flick it open? When you say flick the knife open, does that also mean grabbing it by the blade and flicking? Are there other ways to flick a Yo open that I can prevent by tightening something?

It is very hard to tightened the pivot of my Yo. I have blue Yo and make it really tight but I still can flick open. Your Yo might be different. However, my customized Pacific salt (by master of FFG Tom Krein) and Salt 2 can be really tightend. I use hammer to tap the FRN non screw spyderco for tightened the pivot. I always check my pivot tension of my folder before I leave my place.

It may be incredible Simona, but it's true. If a New York City Police officer or NY Transit Police officer can flick it or spydie drop it open, he or she might very well consider an FRN Jester to be a gravity knife and arrest the person carrying it if they were wearing it so that it was partially or completely visible. Especially if that person gave the officer any lip after he or she spotted it and started to ticket them for carrying a knife that was not fully concealed.

A NYC District Attorney, and especially one in New York County (Manhattan), might go along with it and take the Jester's owner to trial. A judge in New York City might also go along, and they may well be convicted. At that point they could appeal, and any state court judge outside of NYC would overturn the conviction because a Jester does not come anywhere close to the generally accepted definition of a gravity knife under NY State law. But, that entire long, tedious, stressful, and expensive process can be avoided simply by keeping the little guy tucked out of sight.

Right or wrong, that's the way it is in NYC at the moment and there's no reason to expect the climate for carrying knives openly there to improve anytime soon. In fact, it's probably going to get worse soon. AMTRAK has just announced they'll be using metal detectors, and spot checking for weapons and explosives soon.

Looks like it might be time to invest in a kubotan and an extra can of fox defense spray

Visible Jester on the keyring with free pivot can be a illegal gravity knife now??
I can´t believe ...uh!
I can´t imagine what happen, whey they found ..I don´t know, 6"auto in your pocket, probably you get deadly injection from Leo´s directly on the sidewalk of NYC... :D

I must laugh now, today i visited one gas station and there they have for sale italian autos, smaller one was a keyring a biggest one was so so maybe 12" auto, really huge... :D + next- they have had for sale brass knuckles -black, silver or gold color :D with lettering "Dark Killer" on that...
Boy at gas station told me, buy 40 liters here and you get one :D
Something like this one they have had in all sizes :D

Go figure in this great world we live in, how many people do you think are packing a firearm in NYC? Someone carries the oldest tool known to man to use as a tool and runs the risk of arrest...

You are a better man than I Doc. , I consider myself better at flicking than the average cop round these parts , I cant flip mine open . If I try to drop it , I end up with a divott in the floor . I must confess I have tightened the pivots a bit .

As always YMMV . Sounds like NYC is trying to do some social engineering . I fear it may be catching .

I've been thinking about this for awhile now. I'm working on my PhD in Maryland (knife-friendly [good for me]) -- but my family and friends are in Chicago.

As I understand the knife laws in Chicago there is a blade-length restriction of 2.5 inches -- but folders or fixed blades under that limit are kosher.

I hadn't heard about the knife-flicking thing -- but I don't doubt it.

I was either going to get .2 inches ground off of a Fallkniven WM1 (or maybe get a little more than that ground off of it and turn it into a wharncliff) by a guy who does knife customizations -- or I was going to get .15 inches ground off of my 5.11 Master Karambit. The only thing that made me hesitate about the karambit was that it deploys a little slow. You can't easily flick the thing open because the spring is pretty stiff. But, from what you are saying that might be a good thing.

If Chicago won't let me carry my P'kal because of a stupid blade length restriction -- or 'flickability' -- I'll probably play by their commie rules and rice-out the fallkniven.
