Worn a G-shock of some type for decades. Read an article about the tuffest watches, G-shock won.

The only way they could get it to stop working, was to beat it to death with a hammer.

LOL, the only thing that scares a G-Shock. My Pathfinder gets a little beat up at work, but keeps on going.

Can anyone enlighten me why it has the "odd" layout? Did it serve a sepcific purpose?

That's a formidable hammer brother Dan! I wouldn't wager my limited edition stainless steel G against it Sir.

I don't know if it served a specific role, but I like the layout. Seconds, then 24 hr. time inside, with the hands also.

It's a type B flieger pattern, originally from interwar/WWII German pilots watches.

Type B emphasizes the minutes on the larger/outer track and hours on the inside; Type A just has the hours. Diamond instead of a 12 is common on both.

Companies like Stowa and Laco still make very close to original pattern fliegers but modernized versions of the designs are also common. I have a Damasko DA38 that's a modernized Type A that I really like - it's hard to beat for immediate legibility.

Sorry late to respond reply . Very nice collection! I liked the 686 because of eliminating the teeth on spine made it more useful chopping. One I really regret letting go but very good friend pestered me endlessly! 😂 Dan
