I don't have an issue with the price of the Starmate Sprint, but dropping an expensive Sprint so soon after Xmas and the MAP holiday sale seems an odd choice. A lot of us knife Afis are tapped.

If there are still some around when my wallet gets healthy again I will grab one.
Spydiewiki says the Starmate Sprint is a Run of 1200 pieces.

Thanks, RamZar! That is promising! There are still quite a few 15V Sprints available, so maybe I have a shot.

I just checked my receipt (I archive old emails) for Spyderco Starmate Terzuola Folder with 3.75" VG-10 Blade, Black G-10, Liner Lock and Made in Japan. It was purchased from BladeHQ for $159.99 shipped on August 3, 2013.

I'd love to add the Starmate Sprint to my collection but just can't justify the price these days. Sigh....

Went to the SFO and handled the Starmate…

It is a full sized knife, so folks with a full hand size should appreciate it.

Here are some details…

Image

Image

Image

The knife has a liner lock, and felt similar to
Military, with maybe the slightest bit less crispness. Overall good. Felt like two slabs of G10 and a nice thick blade. The detent was on the medium-light side, no problem flicking in any shape or format.

This knife reminds me so much of an Emerson, and I believe it’s design ethos is right in line with that - basic, no frills, hard use, etc.

I don’t want to say that it felt rough around the edges, but had sort of an unrefined vibe to it. The main issue that I see is that the knife basically screams to be used and used hard, but who is going to take a $340 knife to beat on it?

One ‘issue’ I noticed was that the full flat of the blade was making contact with the inside of the scale in a decently noticeable way, both in sound and feel…

Image

To me it is a non-issue, but to someone paying $340 for a knife expecting it to be perfect, this may present a problem. To someone who never uses it and puts it in a collection may not care, nor that rare individual that pays the price of entry and only cares about performance. But I figure it was worth mentioning.

I think most people will not understand this knife. There will probably be reviews highlighting the discrepancy in price and features or materials. I can see where they are coming from.

And for the collector it may be the perfect addition. Take everything with a grain of salt here, because it is an example of one. I did quickly put this one back down and spent far more time with the Manix 2 Salt which I consider one of the absolute best releases of 2025.

EDIT: Seems like a lot of the guys at the SFO picked up an Edgerati. One even picked up 2 lol. I will agree that it presents better in person than it does in description or pictures. IF they make it in titanium and some sort of cool steel I will pick one up. For a ‘fancy’ knife it would beat the socks off a CRK for me, and I have my Cold Steels for hard use folders.

Do you have a Bradley 2? To me the Starmate looks a lot like the Bradley 2 that I just got as a gift from my daughter for Christmas. Was thinking about the Starmate but the Bradley is a very well refined knife for a lot less money and it has a workhorse tool steel for the blade. So now I’m not so sure about the Starmate after reading your review. Would love to see a side by side photo of the two knives.

Thanks for sharing the pictures and observations. There is a lot I like about this colab, especially with Bob Terzuola.

Edit: It's confirmed a hollow ground, my bad 😇

If this was a hollow ground blade, it would be acceptable from a price point.
It is hollow ground and Spyderco has produced dozens of other hollow ground models. If you want a more severe hollow grind I would suggest a Yojimbo/Yojumbo.

Well as far as price goes you can tell what it's worth by what someone is willing to pay. Cant say I see many willing to, but tastes differ.

Was that blade rubbing on the scales due to a centering issue, or did it appear to be a design/tolerance flaw?

My comment is about this specific model. I have multiple models (GB1 and GB2) that are hollow ground. I read that the Starmate will be flat iso hollow?! If it is indeed hollow ground, then my bad, I take back my comment 🙏

Edit: Confirmed a hollow ground blade. I edited my original post to not confuse anyone.

If I had to guess, I would say tolerance more than anything. The space between the G10 was basically just big enough for thr blade to sit in. The blade on this particular example was fairly centered, its just that the blade sits basically up against the scales while closed.

It’s a cool knife! Hopefully it will find it’s fans and with a run of what, 1200? Very cool of Spyderco to satisfy fans of this design like that.

Yeah I agree it is pretty cool of spyderco to bring back older models just because they were released in the past doesn't mean they weren't great.

Some of the steel back then was pretty terrible compared to what we have now but the designs were awesome.

So strange how the Vallotton has randomly gained so much traction around here the past month, when I've been hanging out here basically daily for 8 years now and have rarely heard a peep about it!

I never knew of it before coming here. It's a fantastic looking knife and seems very solid in build quality. I'm just a bit hesitant about spending $350.00 for it.... plus shipping.

Anyone have thoughts or an idea how the Manix Salt dropped in weight ? A standard G10 model weighs in at 4.9 ounces and the Salt version comes in at 4.2 ounces . Thinner scales with the cuts , different liners ? Really a nonissue for me just curious. I will wait until the Bumblebee versions come out since already have the lightweight. MG2
a standard S30v Manix 2 has full liners which aren't skeletoninzed. The crucarta is like that too iirc. Most of the other G-10 Manix 2s have skeletonized liners, so they weigh less.
