On this topic, I just don't see the point of someone coming here and creating an account just to bash the company in one post and then never report back. A lot of the time Sal himself chimes in the conversation and it's all for not. Though, I do recall a recent one similar where the OP did come back and apologized and also took in a lot of information given to him. Would be nice to see that happen more often with these kind of threads.
Why doesn't Spyderco help us avoid fakes?

I agree with everyone in that nobody should be making an account to bash Spyderco or a product and then not becoming part of the forum.TkoK83Spy wrote: ↑Thu Nov 20, 2025 6:45 amYou sweat us so hard lately Naperville, thank you for always thinking of meIf you don't like us, put us on your foe list!

I also think a lot of the negativity could be rolled back.
As far as adding someone to my foe list, Mushroom is on it, but it does not prevent his replies.

Re: Why doesn't Spyderco help us avoid fakes?
As far as avoiding fakes, the only best solution is to buy from approved Spyderco dealers. Apparently, there are some people out there who don’t want to hear that. Then they complain if they end up with a fake, or if they’re not sure if it’s a fake or not.
There are people who start an account here, post one rambling complaint, then disappear. Sometimes they come in cycles, where more than one new member joins and posts a drive-by complaint at or around the same time, and then they vanish back into the ether. Maybe some are the same person, joining under multiple accounts/screen names?
As far as I can recall, I’ve only ever reacted to one person with any degree of hostility on this forum. It was some new guy who posted a thread a few years ago about “Will the earthquake (or whatever disaster it was) in Taiwan mean I won’t be getting the Taichung Spydercos I want?” Or something like that. He absolutely came into the forum disrespecting everyone, especially Sal. That was the one exception I’ve made here.
Ever since I first got on the internet in the late ‘90s, my rule of thumb has been to never post anything, to or about anybody else, that I wouldn’t be willing to tell that person face-to-face. I have always stuck to that rule. And yes, I can be, and have been a real (*bleep*) at certain times in my life if I want to be, but I don’t like to be that way anymore. There is already too much toxicity and conflict in the world to add to it. So as much as possible, I try to remain civil in my interactions. Sometimes I’ve failed in that regard, but as I seem to remember Sal so eloquently stating, “Podody’s Nerfect.”

I'm not exactly sure what you mean here, but to clarify for me, I when I said the forum is less friendly, I meant the people who aren't friendly. It isn't everybody, but it's the same ones. As sal said, it could stop.Naperville wrote: ↑Thu Nov 20, 2025 6:00 am@cabfrank I enjoy reading everyone's posts. They are just ideas. But I find it hilarious that you are saying that the forum is not as friendly as it used to be when you say it to TKO or Mushroom.
There have been entire threads attacking SEF. I get bashed a few times a month. But hey, if forumites love the gatekeepers of TKO and Mushroom, they would have a different perspective.
Take this thread for instance:

As far as those way far out of the galaxy threads, I try not to pay attention.

You can go bargin shopping alright, I probably do more than most, least in my opinion lol. I go at this with the mind set of a big chance of getting something less than I want lol. Sometimes getting something that is pure junk.
I got a box under a work bench in the shop for just those purchases of those bargains lol. When I get those in and see that I just bought something that is just junk, be it a brandy new fake or something that is worn out, it just gets tossed into this box. I call them my parts boxes. They are learning lessons too lol.
I got these parts boxes for different things too, I have one for knives, one for my fishing reels, one for gun parts and a few others that get into the more general things like lawn equipment and diesel motor parts.
These boxes just make a great place for all these kind of things. I try to keep these lessons as memories and learning lessons lol. Expensive, sometimes way more than others too. They make for good parts sometimes.
You just got to keep all this in prospective, it's always better if you can buy from the correct dealers of said items, if and when possible, it's not always possible to do that though. When those things come into focus and where some of us go on the hunt, you just got to be ready to break a few eggs lol...

Re: Why doesn't Spyderco help us avoid fakes?
The easy Answer since this boils down to finding An Authentic Spyderco without the NEW MSRP cost is to buy a factory second. 90% of the time it’s official unless its an image bait and switch. *AVOID BENCHMADE ON EBAY*
There are ways to visually check, but geez the scamming is just another level.
Avoid the spyderco S30V and M4 knives automatically until you get better at eyeballing fakes. Check the seller to see they’ve been on Ebay longer than 5 months, selling other things than knives, and no insane “30 sold/ 3 remaining” type auctions. After a while you’ll get the hang of it.
And of course- Jump on Sprints and Exclusives when they drop (in here). Usually the cheapest before they are scalped.
even thought there are definitely more ways to check for fakes, as other members said, why make it cake?
