Honestly, when I first saw this knife it didn't occur to me it was a PM2. I just thought it was an ill-proportioned knife, a kluge, not a different looking PM2. I feel the same way about many knives, like maybe there's too much going on, and the design could be made cleaner. Truth be told, I'd like to see the smaller hole on most Spyderco knives, and 2.5 mm stock on anything that's currently 3 mm. For sure, fullers can balance the mass of a too-heavy blade, but they also make the blade harder to clean and in this case, cluttered looking.Cl1ff wrote: ↑Sat Jan 28, 2023 1:02 amAren’t these all part of it being a being a PM2?Coastal wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 6:50 pmMan, I love clip points, trailing points, the whole Bowie thing! But to me this blade's proportions are off. The blade is too tall. Give it a smaller hole and reduce its height. Fullers can look badass, but this one is too high and too short. Move it down nearer the grind line and extend it forward almost to the swedge and backward almost to the hole. Make the fuller narrower. Or eliminate it altogether. Make the blade no thicker than 2.5mm.
I sure like the regular PM2, but not the tanto, and not this one. I doubt I'll buy it. I'll buy a bunch of other ones, though!
That would change the underlying design a lot.
I’m not gonna claim to be a great artist or designer, but I have some experience and I think it’s actually a more balanced look than the original. Same for the Tanto. The regular pm2 is good knife design that looks good to me, but it is visually quite handle heavy.
The fuller on this Bowie and the swedge on the Tanto help this balance.
I think if you’re used to the regular PM2, you’re going to view this differently and it won’t look “right” to you.
Artists often struggle with stuff like this and that is why you’ll see digital artists flip their artwork or traditional artist take a break and walk away or to look at their work from a different perspective.
That’s why I suggested something like micarta handles with a backspacer could change up the look enough to shake that. Maybe a bolster or faux bolster.
In my opinion, Sal and Eric know what they’re doing with blade design. Not saying you’re saying they don’t, but I’m saying something without saying something else.
I'm glad so many like the design but, unlike many Spydies, it's not for me.
