Darby, I am so jealous of your house's location! Awesome pics.

Somewhere I have a really crappy cell phone pic of a bald eagle on a telephone pole in my suburban neighborhood, which was a very rare sight...can't seem to find it atm. I also once had a huge red-tailed hawk bag a rabbit right in my front yard while my cats were watching out the window. When he noticed us watching, he took off and could just barely lift the rabbit off the ground. It's crazy how strong they are.

Nice! That's a clever idea, SG...I had no idea that would work with binoculars. I am lacking a decent zoom lens camera currently, so I'll have to try that.

I'm not very knowledgeable with regards to robins. Are they found throughout the U.S. or just certain areas? I see blue jays here in Colorado, but I'm not sure if I've seen a robin.

Magnificent birds these ravens; pretty large up close in the wilderness. Smart. Not scared at all.

Cool pic SG!

Tim, for the past ten years I was living the suburban life in Arvada. Now I am the last house on a long dead end dirt road with miles of woods behind me. It was in Arvada that Hawks were constantly after my chickens. A hawk doesn't outweigh a chicken by much if at all so they cannot fly away with them either.

Winters in New England are rough, my driveway is looooong and the predators are plentiful but I LOVE hiding in the woods.....

Did you get hit bad with that hail? I heard Colorado Mills is closed indefinitely. My friends out there said some places got hammered. The news said it is probably the costliest hail storm ever in Colorado.

I just finished reading about grackles. Sweet, I learned something because of this thread! I knew nothing about them.

Hey Darby, the hail was really, really bad just up north from my house, closer to Colfax & Kipling area, where they had easily golf ball or bigger size.

Luckily, I am more south, closer to Morrison road, so in my area is was just very high volume of tiny hail and it looked like snow when I got home. I was working at our warehouse in Golden at the time, and it was medium out there. It sounded really bad on the roof of our warehouse, so we all went to the front window to look outside and watch our cars get nailed, but luckily nobody got hit too badly. Of course I drove my new-ish Subaru that we just paid off last month that day...but it just got a few small dings and scratches, so it's not worth the insurance hit to me.

Everywhere I go though, the hail repair places are leaving flyers on everybody's windshields. Definitely worst I've seen since I've lived in the area for 30 years or so.

Congrats on the new place, it really sounds like a dream setup to me!

Last time I went out for a hike with the Bradley Bowie, I encountered some woodpeckers:

This past weekend, we encountered a brown bat all tuckered out on the bathroom floor at church:

I freed it by a shed we have on the property (I think it needed sleep and food). When I went to check on it later, there were a handful of vultures about. This was the only one I was fast enough to snap a shot of, but they were pretty close. Fortunately, the bat was still napping in the shed.

Spyderco's CQI has been hitting it out of the park in the last year or so. Not that ones produced before last year are bad or anything, it just seems like every Spyderco I get nowadays is perfect in every way!

Thanks, guys. Here is another one that was on a prickly pear right in front of my truck next to my carport. Trust me that this kind of thing does not happen every day. But when it does happen, it is a real treat and one of the (few IMHO) benefits to living here.

8 or 10 of these guys fly in and land in my almond trees every day. Noisy rascals!
