I've also been known to use the tip of my Tasman Salt to dig silicone out of screw heads lol.

I scrape the inside of pieces of tree bark to create tinder for flint and steel or friction fires.

Yes Lance it was a lot of fun. I do prefer to fish for the smaller ones in the 20-50 pound range; they spend more time in the air. I'd rather eat the Cubera though. :D

Surfingringo wrote:I use my knives when fishing on my kayak and when cleaning fish back on shore and preparing them in the kitchen. Those are the most "real" uses I put them through. The rest is edc stuff like cutting string off my shorts, cleaning under my fingernails and opening envelopes. But hey, I still need a quality knife for those tasks too...maybe even 20 quality knives!! ;)
Judging from your avatar, you definitely require solid knives for fishing!

I just love being on the water. I spent 3 decades as scuba instructor and Light Tackle & Fly Fishing Charter Captain. Lived in a lot of different places; my favorite was Guam. Unfortunately the wife and kids did not like the isolation of Guam so we moved back to the states. I no longer teach scuba and retired my captains license last year. Best move I ever made. It's so nice to be able to get out on the water with no pressure to "produce". One morning I just stopped to watch a dolphin and her newborn calf. The wildlife in SW Florida especially in the back country is spectacular. "My boat" (built for my needs and not clients) runs real skinny and allows me to get away from everyone else on the water. I may need Spyderco to make me a machete so I can cut my way into these tiny creeks that snake through the mangroves. ;)

Sounds like a dream lifestyle. Had a look at shallow water skiffs a while ago and almost built a stitch and glue vessel before I got my kayak.

Arsonists Spyderco machete would definitely be something I'd buy too :)

I worked for a bank for around 10 yrs after my time in the military. About 7 yrs ago I decided the office life was not for me and learned how to drive a big rig. I now own my truck and trailer for a little over 5 years. Going back in my mind, I think one of the reasons to make the change was so that I could carry any knife I wanted without people looking at me weird. I use whatever knife I have with me on the road for food prep, cutting off metal or plastic load seals, mangled mud flaps, wire, duct tape opening boxes and breaking down boxes into small pieces to save space in my little trash can.

Sounds cool man. My dad also drove trucks back in the day. Must be a great way to travel and see your country.

I currently am carrying a PM2 in S110v and dragonfly 2 in zdp. I was carrying the Nirvana for a couple week before. I switch knives from time to time just so the ones left at home don't catch a tude. :D

The romance of trucking is short lived..lol. It's still fun sometimes but for the most part trucking supports my knife hobbit....hobby/habit.

Nice. I have the Pm2 in S30v and and frn vg10 Dragonfly. Love them both.

I did maintenance and repair of pools on and off for 7years and loved being outside even though the pay was lousy. Now I'm an an office at the same desk every day and its not my scene. The pay is very good for what I do, but I'd rather be traveling or doing something with my hands or outdoors. What rig do you drive if you don't mind me asking?

I have a Volvo 660 with a 525hp Cummins.

Believe me, on the days that I get fed up with trucking all I have to do is think about the prospect of returning to an office environment and all of a sudden I feel much better... :D

I'm kind of a self modivated person, if I ever feel the need to be micro managed I just go home to my wife.

Life is too short to not at the very least like what you do for a paycheck. Being an O/O checks a lot of boxes for me...and sprinkle of knives on top..

Ninja Nic wrote:Hi Guys, I was wondering what most of the folks here use their blades for, or do you just collect and store them? I have an ever-growing collection of folders (only 3 Spydies so far but working on that) and I use most of them for EDC and daily tasks. I do admit that some of these knives were impulse buys and are not really practical as working tools, but they still go in the pocket every now and then.

I'm curious as to what you guys do with your blades - food prep? bushcraft? utility? Whats the weirdest thing you've cut with your Spydie?

Looking forward to your replies :)
I'd say I'm pretty close in line with your philosophy, I only have three unused knives so far (and one of those is still "in the mail"), a HAP40 Delica and Dragonfly and a Ti Pingo. The HAP40 knives are in anticipation of the "user" versions getting worn out or lost, the Pingo is because they are on blowout sale price, which means I can *sort of* afford to have a backup to preserve the gorgeous blue anodized bug logo, while I remorselessly mark up/wear off the bug on my first one.

I keep food prep at home to actual kitchen knives, for both utility and sanitary reasons, but folders are pressed in to service for food use on hikes.

Weirdest thing? hmm, I used to deburr metal edges and cut car interior panels with my knife frequently, back when I worked in car audio, but I guess the oddest thing I have cut of late was a silicone watch band for a Patek Philippe watch that somebody brought in to the shop I work at for fitting, that was nerve wracking, since you had to cut segments off the strap to fit it... I don't want to know what a new strap costs for a $20,000.00 watch! IIRC the Chaparral did the honors on that task.

Not all of my knives get regular use, but the rotation comes around to each of them in time. The only Spyderco I would willingly part with is the G10/440C Cat, it just feels like a heavy, not quite as useful D'fly to me... The bigger knives (Stretch, M2, PM2, Millie) lurk at the back of the drawer in anticipation of yard work or hikes most of the time, though they get taken to work on occasion as well.

four months is some serious recovery time, that must have been quite the crash! Hope all is better now.

I doubt Spyderco will ever make a Hurty a**beeter or a Corporate transmurdera model ;)
