I'm 100% with you on the convex IXLER8. More than 60% of my Spydies are convexed. Some have a full height convex close to a zero grind (Superblue Stretch and Caly), others have a lower, more robust convex (Tuff), others are in-between (PM2's, Millies, Sage etc). All of them cut with noticeably less effort than the V-edges because they have much less thickness and drag around the bevel shoulders. Few people seem to like them these days, I am not sure why.IXLER8 wrote:Used this for a full day convex.Much better.
Not to start a war here but : I think most of those that do not like convex edges have never owned or used one. or not a proper one.
I battoned with a steel hammer through 2x4s. It’s tough. It’s my main fixed blade. I feather, Baton, food prep when camping and have not had a single issue. Went hunting and field dressed, skinned three deer with no edge problems. Cut through the rib cage, severed the spine, and took it through the ball joints (so many scary scraping sounds). Not a problem. No chips. Mostly shaving sharp even after all of this. It blows my s30v out of the water. And stops back on basic green compounds. It’s my favourite steel. It takes a lickin and keeps on tickin
I have had it chip when I put a worksharp precision adjust edge on it. Idk if the angle but maybe it was too steep or maybe grit got into my sheath. Never had a problem from freehand. And I had a wicked polished convex edge on it at one point and it never had a problem and sliced like a dream. Could be just a burnt edgeRamonade wrote: ↑Wed Apr 26, 2023 7:56 amIt's funny, I had the opposite experience with the RWL 34 Mule.
My 3 first edges were really chippy ! I'm on the 4th edge right now and it is already better.
Still experience some micro-chipping from normal use, but it seems that there was a lot of fatigued steel there. I know RWL34 since it is often used by french makers. It's an excellent steel, very cool stainless
When I reprofiled I used the work sharp too (with stone holder, venev resin bonded diamond stones and a stabilizer under the clamp). Then freehand, same experience as you. I just reprofiled it yesterday but forgot to take picsSelf Taught wrote: ↑Wed May 24, 2023 7:19 amI have had it chip when I put a worksharp precision adjust edge on it.
