Reprofiled and sharpened the K390 Mule today for testing. :)

Wasn't bad with the SIC stones, it's fine grained and seems to be very clean, sharpened up very well.

*Steel choice comes down to what bevel angles we use on on our knives.

*How much performance difference is there between a 15 dps or 10 dps bevel and 5 dps?

*Is there anything to be gained by normal EDC uses in such thin angles over slightly thicker ones?

*Do the advantages of such a thin bevel outweigh the probability for edge damage?

*How long does the high sharpness on extremely thin angles really last?

I would say it depends on the knife and steel....

Usually the thinner the blade behind the edge the better to a point....

Usually the lower the angle the better to a point...

That said it can make a large difference in cutting efficiency.

For general EDC use?

I would say that depends.

I re-profiled the S110V the other day using a 140 grit diamond plate and then congress mold masters and I'd say it wasn't too bad either. Did not take as long as I thought it would and ended up with a very nice edge.

I'm sure that I'm not the only person who will be very interested to see the K390 test results. :D

Yep, I'll be checking your thread frequently. Thanks for doing this. :)

Cutting with it now, coarse edge, looks like they got it right so it's going to be awhile..... ;)

I always feel less confident in my understanding of the rationale behind the knives purchase after reading these types of threads. There is always a "Wait, what?" response in my head.

That's a bandwagon I would surely love to jump on. The Cruwear will hold me until then, but I'm ready to pay now...

Put it this way, no other production knife will even come close to K390, not even on the same planet.....

It just blew everything else away (Production knives) I have seen yet and I am still in the process.

Can you give an idea how long did it take to reprofile Native on 140 grit diamond plate and what angle did you reprofile it to?

Are you sure about that? I thought K390 wasn't a knife steel..I quote Mr. Stamp:

"K390 isn't a knife steel, K390 is simply an attempt to increase the secondary hardening response of A11 which in general is a cycle which should be avoided in knives entirely because it sacrifices all other properties to gain heat resistance. This is why you will rarely see hot work tool steels used for cold work as they don't have an advantage there."

This is after 820 slicing cuts through 5/8" Manila rope.

Yeah OK...... ROFL

At 60% increase in edge retention over S90V I think Bohler would disagree....

I'm glad I didn't have to make 820 cuts through rope on a mule without scales! Thanks for all your efforts!

I was being sarcastic ;) Its been my thought all along that K390 if properly heat treated will make a awesome knife steel..

Hopefully at least as good as the almighty razor blade approved AEB-L  :D
