Yes. That is insane. It is the equal of The rubber car, speed limited to 20 mph.

The kitchen knife ban thing has been miss understood the doctors weren't saying ban all kitchen knives with pointed tips .
They where trauma surgeons who said long thick deep blades should have a dull tip as the injuries they cause ( a wide bleed channel. Severing arteries ) are responsible in the uk for most fatal stabbings.
Although this was in a domestic situation things have changed since then and the doctors where saying if the tip wasn't pointed/sharp these wounds could have been treated.
But your right it's silly to ban something because of the minority of irresponsible people , what we have in the uk is a different culture and mindset to the USA our police arent allowed to carry knives, guns only carried by fire arm units , tazer by rapid response so it is hard to compare .
A few years ago there where a huge number of fatal stabbings in London Rudolph gulliani ? was quoted as saying Londons gang problem was a lot worse than in the us due to pulling a trigger from distance is very different to stabbing somebody.
Whilst I'm not sure if I agree or could say its worse one place or the other the fact is some knives are designed and some from spyderco as defense weapons .
The whole issue will always be there as I said I think education and getting the media to stop sensationalising things is the key , but as long as man exists well find a way to harm each other wether we have steel or sticks .

Another day at the freak show...

Stabbings on our city streets, muni buses, train stations, even football and baseball games occur with disturbing regularity. Police statistics shown on the news a few weeks ago report a dramatic surge in street muggings for iPhones and iPads. Typical MO is a thug will pull a pocket knife on the victim, demand the goods and run. This is occurring in broad daylight and on crowded city streets, bus stops, etc.
Just to illustrate my point, here's yet ANOTHER stabbing from today...

That wasn't a stabbing. That goes back to my comment about the human factor.

A number of things to consider...you don't grab for the knife....another is the age of the men...then their location in Haight Ashbury. Everyone knows that area as the "Hippy Holdout" so drug use would increase exponentially.

The annoying thing with "journalists" these days is they ignore stories like this...

Father stabs Mountain Lion with pocket knife to save son

Even the story of Aron Ralston was relatively ignored until they made a movie out of it.
